(20,365 posts)the Marine instructor said that even though the bullet is small it's velocity can cause more harm than a BAR or Thompson. Why the hell can the public buy such a thing?

(11,443 posts)Never, in my wildest dreams, did I imagine that one day those M-16s we were using would be legal for non-military civilians. The AR-15 is almost the same but doesn't have a fully automatic function unless someone modifies the damn thing.

(32,025 posts)Before Vietnam. The M-16 was designed for the Army based on the AR-15 not the other way around as is sometimes claimed. Because they are automatic M-16s are not legal for the general civilian population. I am unaware of any shooting incident where someone had modified a semi-automatic rifle to become a automatic rifle.

(36,312 posts)Your issue seems to be more with the .223 Remington or 5.56mm NATO then with the gun itself. You probably don't have an issue with AR-15 that fires 410 shotgun shells

I shoot AR style rifles outfitted for 22lr, 9mm, and 5.56x45. And also 7.62x52 out of AR-10s. How big and how fast a bullet moves determines its affect on living tissue. No doubt about it.
