(2,190 posts)Cannot fathom how those cops could avoid running into any of the parents in a town that small. Seems likely they will have to move just to keep far from the confrontations ahead.
If you've ever lived in a really small town, you understand. If not, it'll be hard to imagine.
Peace for Uvalde.

Are the cops afraid of the people they're supposed to serve and protect?

(99 posts)Not "seems like", it is factual and legal as LEO's "have no legal duty to protect an individual life". Google it, read it...and weep as I did.
LEO having a moral obligation to defend the innocents, yes, I would agree with that.
LEO having a legal obligation or duty to defend the innocents...well, the Supreme Court put that argument to bed years ago.

(25,382 posts)City Council is probably a part-time "volunteer" position with a stipend. It's like school board.
I know people who serve in small towns. They all have other full time jobs.
Attilatheblond
(2,190 posts)Yep. In really small towns, the stipend, if there is one, is not the point of running for public office. Outside job is what pays the bills.
In my experience, it is more about access to the group health insurance. People in such places are often self-employed or working jobs without much, if any, benefits. Health insurance for such individuals and their families is way expensive.
Public service jobs with benefits are a prize in such limited economies.

(8,069 posts)Kevlar vests, helmets, assault weapons, communications gear... a huge hunk of the town's budget goes to the police force. I suspect, in fact, that more taxpayer money goes into equipping those cops than goes to their local schools.
If you mean mentally equipped--maybe. Though I also suspect they had some exercises or training on how to deal with active shooters.
But I totally agree with your last two sentences.
Outlaw the ARs. And repeal the legislation that exempts gun manufacturers from civil liability.

(4,616 posts)The Chief who decided to wait has had more than 32 hours of active shooter training per public records obtained by press. As recent as in the the past year. He's been a cop for over 27 years. NO EXCUSE!

crickets
(25,981 posts)The overwhelming, obvious reason why is that they didn't want to face someone with the firepower this kid had. Who would? But on that day, that was the job. They did not do their jobs. If police don't want to face someone with a semi-automatic, and no one does, then they should be howling at Congress to do something about gun legislation.

(40,212 posts)It was The Border Police. From the reporting on CNN and elsewhere Border Police made the independent decision to go in against orders from the (local) Incident Commander.
At least one father says EMT told him his daughter may have been saved if she hadnt been left to bleed out.
pnwmom
(108,980 posts)because the local sheriff told them to, the Border patrol got a key from the janitor and broached the "barricade" -- ie. the locked door.

(4,616 posts)was OFF DUTY. He was nearby getting a haircut, heard the call, borrowed a shotgun from the barber and some shells and went to the school. When he and the others decided to no longer wait and "stack up" and go in, HE had no vest, not helmet and ZERO protective gear. Yes he is the one who took the murderer out. He did an interview and has been on the news all day.

(9,656 posts)The bp @ barbershop gets a call from his wife who is a teacher, he grabs the gun, goes to school, grabs a couple other cops, they start clearing classrooms at the other end of building from where the shooter is ( with cops waiting outside)
A second bp guy who has been waiting to be told to enter does so basically against orders

(53,791 posts)If so some cops could've began breaking windows to distract the killers attention from just the door and the kids. They'd use a loudspeaker of course to advise the kids to get away from the windows.
This would also distract the killer.
If no windows, what about the hallway walls? If they're just sheetrock, the custodian could have an axe for chopping through which would also distract the gunman.
All of the diversionary stuff would be to get in any possible way, or make the killer thinks so. And as it turned out the Border Patrol SWAT team didn't have to do any of that, they just got the key from the custodian.
All the other cops just cowered in the hallway doing nothing but listening to the killer shooting the kids. Nobody was thinking until SWAT got there, and even they were told just stand there at first before they said forget this, who's got the key?
The incident commander nor anyone else apparently thought of the most obvious thing.
Sheer incompetence.
ecstatic
(32,712 posts)Dozens of cops on the scene did absolutely nothing. Either dirty cops, cowards or both. The kids were prepared. They did their part and followed their drills, but the police were not prepared or willing to protect them.

(9,760 posts)And their cowardice is catered to.
It's a tough & dangerous job. A good law enforcement officer doesn't believe it's OK to make it easier or safer for themselves by violating the rights and endangering the safety of those they're tasked with protecting & serving.
Anyone who can't face that ought to find a different line of work.

(13,596 posts)parts of the building to sneak around and find anyone that was hiding away from where the shooter was. That wouldn't have even been dangerous if they knew which room the shooter was in, and I think they did. I'd think even if they were ordered not to, someone would have mutinied and ignored that. I sure hope our cops here would.
If it's correct the Border patrol guys came in and ignored orders to stand down, it makes it really stink. And how about those feds versus yokel cops? That has to leave a mark.
