Georgia's top elections official was expected to appear Thursday before a special grand jury investigating whether former President Donald Trump and others illegally tried to meddle in the 2020 election in the state.
Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger was summoned to the Fulton County courthouse where the special grand jury has been meeting, according to a subpoena obtained by The Associated Press through an open records request. Other subpoenas seek documents and testimony from five other people in his office.
Trump directed his ire at Raffensperger after the fellow Republican refused to bend to pressure to overturn the votes that gave Democrat Joe Biden a narrow presidential election victory in Georgia. Raffensperger defeated a Trump-endorsed challenger in the Republican primary as he seeks reelection.
Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis said her investigation includes looking into a January 2021 phone call in which Trump pushed Raffensperger to find the votes needed for him to win Georgia. Trump has said his call with Raffensperger was perfect and that he did nothing wrong.

(21,949 posts)Raffensperger was the one who decided to record Trump's "perfect" phone call in the first place, suspecting that something was going to go down. He's since stated that he felt threatened by the call. Novermber 2021:

Raffensperger, a conservative who supported Trump, resisted the presidents demands. That prompted Trump to suggest the refusal to expose mass voter fraud in Georgia on which Trump insisted but which did not exist, as in all other states could be a criminal offense.
Thats a big risk to you, Trump said. Thats a big risk.
In Integrity Counts, a book published on Tuesday, Raffensperger writes: I felt then and still believe today that this was a threat. Others obviously thought so, too, because some of Trumps more radical followers have responded as if it was their duty to carry out this threat.

Raffensperger is going to testify as such to the grand jury. Seems like this would be significant testimony when it comes to determining whether charges should be brought.

It was a "perfect" call.
