https://edition.cnn.com/2022/06/02/us/tulsa-hospital-shooting-thursday/index.html(CNN) An assault-style weapon found at the scene of Wednesday's deadly shooting in an Oklahoma medical building had been bought that day, according to three federal sources briefed on the investigation.
A gunman -- who was later found dead -- opened fire on the second floor of a medical building on the campus of Saint Francis Hospital in Tulsa on Wednesday afternoon, killing four people. Fewer than 10 others were injured, authorities said.
The assault-style weapon was an AR-15 style firearm, a source said. A different weapon -- a handgun -- was purchased on May 29, a source told CNN.
The two firearms -- a semiautomatic rifle and a semiautomatic pistol -- were both found at the scene, Tulsa police Capt. Richard Meulenberg told CNN earlier. "It was just madness inside, with hundreds of rooms and hundreds of people trying to get out of the building," Meulenberg told CNN.

(6,811 posts)I think there should be a training period too.
Most REAL militias train.
Most REAL countries that care for their citizens BAN these weapons too.
what the fuck is wrong with us?
I'll answer.
Its the fucking NRA and gun manufacturers, and Republicans that are wrong with us.

(36,312 posts)That anyone who handles a gun, for any reason, needs at least training on basic gun safety . Many here disagreed.
I've also said that anyone who gets a gun for home defense needs to get training on how to safely handle and store the gun and to formulate a plan as to knowing what situations warrant getting the gun and practice that plan.

(19,204 posts)we had to take a hunter safety course before we could get our first hunting license. It lasted three hours I believe, and was all about gun safety, not about identifying animals or anything.
At the time we thought it was a stone drag, because at 15 years old we knew everything there was to know about everything! Looking back now, I'm glad we had that training because it taught us to respect firearms.
I think everyone buying a firearm of any type would benefit from that type of training now.

Presumably RWers are going to tell us that the solution is to make sure medical buildings only have one door.

(31,028 posts)I see now that the problem is the police are a huge part of the gun culture. They cant bring themselves to speak against guns. And I know many police are in favor of gun legislation. They just dont express it and support it strongly enough because theyre such right wingers. Its just a typical case of Republicans voting against their own self interest

(4,426 posts)Police organizations used to oppose assault-types of weapons with large clips. Then it all changed. TPM has a good rundown on it:

That's why it was phrased that way. They're lucky I'm not a reporter.

(1,606 posts)Rather unartful wording!
Who actually ARE these CNN "contributors" listed at the end?
I might understand such use of language coming from writers who have made personal peace with this level of mass casualty, "fewer than 10."
Who is responsible for editorial review? Apparently CNN has made comfort with this characterization "fewer than 10."
This is all so dystopian.

When the answer comes back a depressing ZERO, it becomes much clearer what we as a country are up against.

You have to be trained before you drive a car. Is it too goddamned much to ask all gun humpers go through some sort of safety training? Sure, you can buy a gun, but you can't take it home today because you have to do some basic safety training first. Is that too much to ask?
