'Negotiator' tried to call school shooter during attack, Uvalde mayor says

As the deadly school shooting at Robb Elementary School unfolded in Uvalde, Texas, last week, a would-be negotiator was frantically trying to reach the gunman via cellphone from a funeral home across the street, the city's mayor has said.

Speaking in an interview with The Washington Post on Wednesday, Uvalde Mayor Don McLaughlin said he rushed to the Hillcrest Funeral Home after receiving the “first call” that the gunman, 18-year-old Salvador Ramos, had crashed his pickup truck nearby.

When he arrived, McLaughlin, a Republican, said he came across an official he identified as "the negotiator."

“His main goal was to try to get this person on the phone,” he said in the interview, which was also conducted by Telemundo San Antonio. "They tried every number they could find," McLaughlin said. But the shooter never answered the phone.

They wanted to give the "negotiator" time to reach said gunman. Very interesting, but ...

The incident commander decided this had turned into a hostage/barricaded subject response rather than an active shooter. Everything they did reflects that kind of response.

The better question is WHY did he decide to do that? Information on injured people inside should have been enough to change the calculus on that, even if shooting had completely stopped.

The reality is there is ample evidence that they knew there was an active shooting due to concurrent 911 calls from kids inside. They are trying to cover the fact that they allowed this kid to equip himself like a one man army legally and a couple dozen cops were terrified to do their job. Sort of blows up their whole "good guy with a gun" nonsense.
