Set aside for the moment the bluntly obvious politicking that was going on, and focus on this simple lesson about people contributing clothes and canned goods:

1. People are personally generous and helpful.

2. Personal (and by extension, church) generosity is not enough for most disasters. That's why we have Government to step in.
