Rs are such idiots who claim he is mentally aged. For Joe, age has only improved him. He has no effs left to give!
Unfortunately, with the R and Putin hold on Congress, I don't expect to see anything from it.
What have we become?

We need legislation, and the POTUS made a strong call for that.

Excerpt
One possible executive order, for example, is for Biden to ban the sale of military-style assault rifles to civilians for at least six months while the federal government assesses the overall problem.
Another is to impose a one-year waiting period on sales of so-called assault guns to give police and others the opportunity to examine why someone might want to purchase such a firearm.
Yet another is a nationwide ban on large capacity magazines that allow mass killers to keep firing military-style assault rifles without reloading.
And finally, how about a ban on the sale of military-style body armor to civilians?

(115,743 posts)They are used to manage the resources of the executive branch or set policies for executive branch agencies to follow. Since outlawing or regulating guns is clearly a legislative branch action - as it would require the expenditure of funds, which only the Congress can approve, the president does not have the power to do it by executive order.

(21,497 posts)Biden can or should do to curb gun violence?
SYFROYH
(34,172 posts)He could have tried to change the game but taking AWB off the table, even if he wants it, to focus on the things that are more possible.
Once again he starts off by saying he doesn't want to take away anyone's guns, but then says he wants to ban some guns.
It feels like 2013 all over again.

(24,738 posts)off the table?
SYFROYH
(34,172 posts)And those other things would probably have a bigger impact on gun violence.
wnylib
(21,497 posts)Taking guns away - only assault rifles. There are many other guns besides that, so what's the beef?
SYFROYH
(34,172 posts)....will probably save more lives than an AWB.
There isn't overwhelming support for an AWB, but other things have more support.

(21,497 posts)Other sources report different figures for support of an assault weapons ban:
https://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2022/05/senate-state-bias-filibuster-blocking-gun-control-legislation/638425/
https://www.politico.com/story/2019/08/07/poll-most-voters-support-assault-weapons-ban-1452586
The previous ban, which Republicans allowed to expire, did make a difference. So did letting it expire.
I don't know why you oppose an AWB, but Biden made some good points about why we should do it. And I fully agree with him.
SYFROYH
(34,172 posts)And it always seems a bit cooked by either the pro-gun or anti-gun side.
Will it reduce some deaths, maybe, but there will be a price to pay come election time, just like in 1994 and the ascendency of Newt.
I'd rather take the AWB off the table and work on other things that will reduce gun deaths.

(21,497 posts)He laid out the reasons for gun control in a moving description of the level of violence and the realities of what the shootings do to human bodies. He gave specific reforms that should be done, and he reminded legislators that the people are so fed up that it could be a voting issue this year.
All bases covered. Very moving speech. I felt pride and relief that he was taking a strong, committed stand. Cheered him on as I listened.

(42,770 posts)I kept waiting for him to lay it out as to what is holding us back with sensible gun control. Who knows maybe people don't understand. Why leave it to wondering? "Here is where we stand now, Democrats have supported almost every measure. Republicans have not. We need x number of votes from Republicans to pass sensible gun reform. As you know the Senate is tied 50/50. If you care please call your Republican senator?". Something like that.
wnylib
(21,497 posts)that we all have right now instead of making it a political speech. He did mention that it was Republicans who let the previous assault weapons ban expire.
I think he was wise not to lay out Republicans vs. Democrats in this speech. Not the right timing or appeal at this time. Plenty of time to make those points when the Senate wrangling begins.

(42,770 posts)for many many years. The R's are just waiting for it to blow over, which it sadly will. Just ask the Parkland Florida school kids who banded together to lobby for control!

Too many angry people. Buffalo, Uvalde, and Tulsa within 2 weeks. Nationwide March For Our Lives protests coming up on June 11. More angry people speaking out now than ever before.

(21,497 posts)bring some changes. Maybe not enough, but something will be done besides just talk.
I am hearing it everywhere, at the library, drug store, supermarket. Of course, I live in western NY, still reeling from the Buffalo massacre, so that might be part of the reason. But I am not in Buffalo. I am in a small city surrounded by rural red voters and a right wing County government. But people here are angry and committed to an assault ban and national gun safety laws.

(8,924 posts)Amidst all the passion, the fact remains that Republicans are creating this problem all on their own and until that is dealt with by the voters, nothing worthwhile is going to be done and nothing is going to change that will prevent the kinds of shootings we have all witnessed this week.

(8,924 posts)They must be made to understand that this issue comes down to a binary choice. Either elect enough Democrats or live with the murders. It cant be both ways. Every vote for a Republican is a vote for the murders to go on. Democrats want to fix this, Republicans dont. Cold hard fact.
