Arizona Husband Claims He Was 'Startled' Into Shooting Beloved Ballet Dancer

The Maricopa County Attorney's Office charged a man with two felonies on Friday after the death of his wife, according to a statement released by the County Attorney's Office.

Christopher Hoopes faces charges of second-degree murder and unlawful discharge of a weapon after his wife, Colleen Hoopes, was found shot in her home on May 24.

Hoopes called Tempe police, telling them he woke up startled and fired his gun twice before realizing he had shot his wife, according to court documents.

“The victim in this case was an extremely talented dancer, beloved by her community,” stated interim County Attorney Rachel Mitchell in the release. “Her life was cut short, and this office will seek justice for her and her family, who are devastated by her death.”

At home, there’s me and my wife, 3 dogs, and 3 cats. I’m not counting the outdoor animals.

We live in the country and lock our doors at night.

The dogs and cats are on and off the bed all night. My wife and I are in and out of bed to go to the bathroom. Sometimes the dogs will bark. Maybe they have a reason. Maybe a fly buzzed around the house next door (about 1/4 mile away) or a bear made a sound in the woods. Who knows? This is a typical night.

My point? None of this is startling. None of this would be startling enough for me to go for my gun, if I had a gun.

So, either this guy is unstable or a moron. Or he’s a standard run of the mill nutjob. Or he’s lying. Or he’s worked himself into a frenzy so that he’s afraid of everything, thus the need for a gun. Or some combination. Whatever the case, he needs to be arrested, convicted, and forgotten about.
