Been slowly losing my voice, Ear Nose & Throat Doctor found the problem last week, I have a cyst on my
vocal chords. Doc said they'd "cut my head off, scrap everything clean and glue my head back on." after
I'd asked about the procedure, so I replied with the only decent answer, "Hope they get it on straight
this time"
Seriously, he said the surgeon he recommended would put me under and "probably" use a laser. I've only been
"put under" once in my life after a head-on car crash (not my fault) 30 years ago so I'm a little nervous.
I'm to be at the hospital at 8:30 so I'm guessing around 9:30 will be the actual operation, have no idea if
they'll keep me overnight.
E,N & T Doc said to refrain from talking for 2 weeks after the operation, told my friends to "Enjoy the silence"
Wish me good luck.

If I could figure out a way to control the message, I would come up with a spectacular bunch of gibberish she'd be too embarrassed to pass on.

(14,909 posts)Anesthesiology has made great strides in 30 years. Same with laser surgery and medicine.
Recent advances
* New inhalational anaesthetics allow rapid, pleasant gaseous induction of anaesthesia and rapid recovery with a minimal hangover effect
* Target controlled infusion techniques have improved the accuracy of total intravenous anaesthesia and pave the way for closed loop automatic anaesthesia
* A unique opioid, remifentanil, allows fine control of intraoperative analgesia but its effects wear off within minutes of stopping infusion
* Separation of stereoisomers has allowed the development of improved safer local anaesthetics
Mobile epidurals are rapidly gaining popularity in labour wards because they allow normal mobility with high quality pain relief
* Neurokinin type 1 receptor antagonists promise to further improve management of postoperative nausea and vomiting
* Recent developments in equipment have helped to minimise the problems of anaesthetising patients with difficult airways

(24,736 posts)Husband has had a couple complex surgeries lately. We have been AMAZED at the proficiency, from top to bottom.
Just don't limit yourself on the pain pills after, as your team will instruct you. Husband did that on day 3 (not wanting to get too dependent on them..) and regretted it.
We will be pulling for you!

(6,927 posts)I once took care of a very alert gentleman on a ventilator (tube down your throat, cannot talk). He would not write simple questions or messages. Most people would write it they were able "bedpan". He would write "Would you please put me on the bedpan and tell my family to wait". We kept them to share with the family.
You may find you have a flair for writing.
Wishing you the very best results from your surgery. What they put you under with these days is much better than 30 years ago.

(9,983 posts)from one who's recently been put under A LOT! My advice is to count backwards from 10 and make a bet with yourself as to how far you get. See if you remember when you wake up. You probably won't, but I always do. I never get farther than 6. Never.

(14,532 posts)The co-anchor of the NBC morning show underwent surgery to remove a polyp on her vocal cord that was harming her ability to speak. Recovery meant total vocal rest, so Jones had to remain totally silent for several weeks.
Jones, 41, said she learned several valuable lessons during her recovery.
The gift of silence and being still, she said. Were all so busy, very rarely do we give ourselves permission to sit still, and in that I found clarity, I found peace.
At first it was very difficult, Im not gonna lie, ordering a chai tea on a memo board or trying to talk to the kids, she added. But after I just embraced it, I kind of found a gift in that.

I suppose with the laser, it will be minimal pain, minimal recovery time as well.
I have been "put under" for a couple of knee surgeries, 2 ob/gyn issues, tonsillitis and the colonoscopies. That part of it is fast, the drugs really knock your socks off quickly. It seems like you wake up in 2 seconds; then its time to go home. A couple of decades ago the sedation drugs were not as good as the ones now.
You can let us know how it went and spare the voice for 2 weeks! Get well soon!

(34,075 posts)I've been under an average of once every 5 years (if I'm remembering all of my surgeries). All but one were no big deal. The one that was a big deal wasn't dangerous - just incompetence that robbed me of some pain control in what is (under the best of circumstances) a painful operation.
That anesthesiologist is permanently banned from touching me, or anyone in my family. (Almost cancelled the last surgery, since he was assigned to me "day of." Fortunately, they were able to find a replacement.)

(10,137 posts)When I had surgery a few years ago I spent a long time with the surgeon and later with the anesthesia nurse-practitioner going over what they were going to do. It's scary, but if you followed the instructions about what to do to prepare things should go ok. Nowadays the trend is to not keep people in the hospital if they can possibly avoid it.
Good luck!

While nodes are not the same as a cyst the not talking is critical in the recovery.
