Just days away from the first congressional hearing on the events of Jan. 6, Rep. Liz Cheney, R-Wyo., called the Capitol attack a "conspiracy" and described its fallout as an "ongoing threat."
"It is extremely broad. It's extremely well-organized. It's really chilling," Cheney said on "CBS Sunday Morning."
The Wyoming lawmaker suggested the willingness of many Republican Party members to turn a blind eye to former President Donald Trump's efforts to overturn the election in hopes of staying in his favor has, in part, created a "personality cult" around Trump, shielding him from facing consequences.
"We have too many people now in the Republican Party who are not taking their responsibility seriously and who have pledged their allegiance and loyalty to Donald Trump," Cheney said. "It is fundamentally antithetical it is contrary to everything conservatives believe to embrace a personality cult. And yet, that is what so many in my party are doing today."
Cheney called out House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, in particular, alleging that the top House Republican has chosen to embrace more hateful sects of his party and has "turned his back on the Constitution" in hopes of becoming the next House speaker.

Never thought I'd support a Cheney, considering how much I hate their dad, but damn, girl! As my daughter says, Liz plays the long game.

(12,278 posts)I hope for her. The murder of the retired judge in WI should be a wake up. Also security for their family members too.
shithole and others have given the green light because they are backed up in the corner.
Also for GOVs Whitmer and Evers. The jury acquitted Whitmer's plotters which I hope she and her family are well protected.
At this point in time, this is a shithole country due to the GQPs.

(5,843 posts)Those who pledge loyalty to the orange motherfucker (and for WHAT????) are violating their oath of office and must be removed. They have pledged their loyalty and are working to support one unelected seditionist. They have completely violated what the people elected them to do and what they pledged to do, which is:
I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office on which I am about to enter: So help me God.

(15,540 posts)I was very, very impressed by her and what she said. She did not mince any words or try to soften her language around what happened that day and for that I am grateful. She is articulate, and I truly believe that even if she has a slight motive of wanting to be re-elected, that her main motif is out of love for her country and democracy.
I do not see eye to eye on her stances on major issues, but that's OK. That's what a democracy is about. I can't hate her for that. I won't hate her for having a different stance on issues. But with regards to the insurrection and Trump, she is absolutely to be admired.

(5,444 posts)Such integrity is apparently lacking in much of the Republican party. She believes in their social policies, cultural policies and economic policies, but not in power at all costs-- something we can hope the Republicans supporting Trump's lies will come to regret.
