I saw Anthony Rapp and Wilson Cruz from "Star Trek: Discovery" over the weekend at AwesomeCon. Someone asked them about the whole controversy about Star Trek being too "woke". Here's what Wilson had to say.
I want to say Im so tired of this negative connotation for the word woke. You want to stay asleep? You want to close your eyes, and you know [and] have a nice slumber that allows you to imagine a world where everyone is the same, and you know, everyone loves the same way and identifies the same way? That is boring st! And its not real.
So you are asleep, and I prefer to be wide awake. I prefer to see people for exactly who they are and appreciate them. And maybe I dont understand, or maybe I dont identify exactly with your experience, but I respect you as a human being for having it. And all I require from you is that you give me that same respect in return. And if thats being woke, then Im woke.

The ignorati have long used "liberal" as a pejorative, and now they're attacking "woke" the same way.
We should never be defensive or back down to those deplorable bigots. Wear it proudly and righteously throw their ignorance back in their faces!

(1,389 posts)Ill accept being called a Democratic Socialist, although Im a life long registered Democrat. I believe that is what FDR and Kennedy/Johnson were doing. But Im an old, life long Democrat. My idealism is still intact. I think that interdependence can be synergetic. Screw Ayn Rand.

(129,465 posts)one of the exhortations that my mom would say all the time was "Don't let them define you". And she meant it too... She would quickly say "Don't define me" to anyone who tried to pull out some bullshit about her.
That's my advice to Democrats. Don't EVER let someone else "define you" and what you stand for or believe.

(13,195 posts)I think that the vast majority of Dems find it extremely annoying and an immoral drain on our credibility. It's priggish and vain at best. It's just not something people tend to notice about themselves, so they do it with what they think are good intentions. It's a shame, but it's just no good as a position and even less good as a pose.
People can, of course, say what they want about themselves, claim to be whatever they want to claim, claim enlightenment and agree to agree with themselves that's what they've achieved. Those folks just should be kept away from the Dem mic when what they say bungles for us all. The Dem mic should be used to say, "The non-team-playing, self-elected, ineloquent, off-putting 'activists' speak only for themselves."

(53,987 posts)The original meaning, I fully am behind it. The white appropriation of it, not so much. It is used much more as a "purity" test. The RW version...why should we really fucking care how they use it or misuse it? Inclusivity is not synonymous with "woke" and those who use it that way are looking at the idea in the wrong way. That said, there are those on our side who use it, as I said earlier, as a purity test or to jam their verion (or the latest version) of "wokeness" down the throats of people, usually on our side. "Star Trek: Discovery" is very good at inclusivity and bringing in topics of that nature without it being at an "after school special" level of finger-wagging.
Any good idea or concept can be perverted, misused, or distorted. Sometimes, it can be difficult to see or admit when a good idea is being corrupted, but it happens. Political correctness is another idea, if executed well, is useful to liberalism and progress, but if it is not, then it is a shitshow.
