Cornyn "optimistic" there are "60 plus" votes for gun legislation

Sen. John Cornyn said Monday he's "optimistic" there will be "60 plus" votes on gun control legislation a bipartisan group of senators has been negotiating. That would be enough to overcome a filibuster and send a bill to the floor.

The Texas Republican is part of the group trying to craft a measure in the wake of deadly shootings last month in Buffalo, New York, and Uvalde, Texas.

President Joe Biden last week called on the Senate to move forward, saying "this time, we have to take the time to do something."

Mr. Biden and his fellow Democrats have called for bans on assault weapons and high-capacity magazines, as well as red-flag and safe storage laws and strengthening background checks. At the very least, Mr. Biden has called for the minimum age to buy an assault weapon to be raised to 21 from 18.

The only way you're going to get Republican votes is if the bill is nothing more than a toothless statement such as "It's not nice to shoot people".

Put the GOP on the record. This bill from the GOP point of view is 'do nothing so we can say we did something" for November.

They will say "the Dem's sunk moderate legislation with extreme unconstitutional proposals that had no chance in passing" or something like that. And MSM would probably run with that.

They're proud to vote against any gun reform. They want it on their record as it helps them with the millions of hardcore gunners - who are a very dependable voting bloc for the Pubs.

background check will be weak.

Because, there will be nothing that interferes with gun and ammo sales or costs Republicans their gun humper votes.

...and more time to observe possible mental illnesses that typically emerge around 18 (give or take a few years).

But I read that a three-judge panel for the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 4th Circuit determined that regulations preventing firearm dealers from selling handguns to individuals younger than 21 years old violated the Second Amendment.

The issue was the age for all handguns (which Heller ruled was protected for home defense). An age requirement of 21 for weapons defined as assault weapons would be a much smaller group of restrictions.

will campaign on how they are doing something about gun violence. Just like they go home & claim credit for infrastructure work that they voted against.
