Mike Franken wins Democratic US Senate primary but Abby Finkenauer really lost

As someone who voted for Franken, I have to say that Finkenauer shot herself in the foot. She lost as an incumbent while in Congress, she didn't get enough signatures to be placed on the ballot (and got lucky with the deciding judge), she denigrated the judge who said she didn't have enough signatures, she depended on her union support to do the hard work and pull off the victory, and she didn't campaign much outside her home area.

She turned off a lot of Democratic primary voters with her poorly-run campaign. If I were in a union that supported her, I would be pissed.

She "lost" her seat in 2020

Presidential and congressional election results, Iowa's 1st Congressional District, 2020
Race Presidential U.S. House
Democratic candidate Democratic Party 47.4 48.6
Republican candidate Republican Party 50.8 51.2
Difference 3.4 2.6

She did better than Biden in her district.

She actually has political experience.

The BS being spouted by the dark money buying ads for Franken that a WOMAN COULD NOT DRAW MODERATES apparently didn't look in the governors office. He didn't campaign that well. The dark money PACs bought a lot of ads in the IC-CR corridor. Voter turnout was LOW!!!!

I had a political button in the 1980s "Don't trust the Generals: Electric, Dynamic, or Haig" I don't trust admirals either.

I certainly don't trust an admiral with no legislative experience. We don't need another old white man from the military industrial complex in the Senate. We just don't. I will still vote for him but it is a sad day when an underqualified old white man defeats a qualified woman.

The only hope is that Grassley is so deep in the January 6th coup that a lot of republicans stay home. Or he continues to say stupid things about abortion and school shootings and women and parents show up and vote his addle-minded corruptness out of office. But -- given what I have seen in my 9 years in Iowa, Grassley will win big against a dude who looks just like him. He may not say the same things as Grassley -- but another 70 plus year old white guy is not what we need.

I don't know if anyone stands a shot against that ornery dusty fool Grassley - but I hope Moderates in the middle will give him a look. All Democratics vote D - and maybe with a little luck and outreach - he can overcome that 20 pt divide that Chuck has had since 1980.

He is 25 years younger than Grassley.

Democrats need to run candidates who have a chance of winning. Maybe that is how the majority of democratic primary voters saw things when they voted.
