It could have been much deadlier. When they broke windows if they would have shot the first few people who came through it would have ended it.

Even if our enemies don't live by the code of proportional response and deescalation of tensions, the friends of democracy need to. The Capitol Police held the line and people who support the rule of "We the People" need to hold the line too.

This was not a riot gone bad. Why was Tarrio carrying high cap magazines? Answer is simple, to kill as many liberals as he could once they brought the weapons in via the river.

So they breached the Capital, as soon as that occurred it was no longer a riot. No longer civil disobedience. No longer one set of rules for repukes and another for liberals. It is the only thing they understand.

the fact is there weren't enough cops there to stem the riot, and opening fire would have just increased the blood lust of the rioters.

There were definitely gun in the crowd. Had the police or anyone started shooting, it would have been a blood bath.

The bloodshed would have been historically clarifying (and that's why people in the 19th century said that war was history's forest fires), but it would have been bad for civilization itself.

I'm angry at them too, but we need to deescalate the attacks on civilization, not build to a climax.

You're thinking the D.C. National Guard...both Capitol police officers and MPD were armed! Remember Sergeant Fanone testified that the traitors were trying to take his weapon from him...when he was grabbed and dragged into the crowd...Fanone was a member of MPD!

Also it was a Capitol police officer who shot the woman that was attempting to climb through a window!

Trump obviously knew about it beforehand and left the Capitol unguarded. Then he didn’t call reinforcements. If the officers just started shooting everyone, Trump probably would have declared martial law. He’s that demented.

If I were in charge, I'd have authorized lethal force

If I were there defending the Capital, I'd have used it.

It would have been awful and given our international enemies a lot of material.

Could you imagine blood running down the Capital steps?

They made the right choice......if we recognize the amazing restraint they showed.

If I was there and in charge it would have been a much worse event. A river of fascist blood would have flowed down the steps.

It would have been more seriously violent.

But fortunately very calm cops did the right thing. They didn't escalate the situation.

It is a national shame that, with all of the hints, of potential violence, in the days leading up to the insurrection, that just a handful of cops were left to deal with thousands of angry protesters. That is another issued that needs an investigation.

The courage of the Capitol Police, delaying the breech, against overwhelming odds, is what saved the lives of the lawmakers.

I agree with those who say Trump might have used it to his advantage but I also think a few well placed rounds probably sends about 3/4 of those imps running for the hills, particularly when they breached the outer perimeter and were running en mass to the steps. In that scenario there might have been fewer people there to breach the actual building making it more or a fair fight for police.

Of course it’s all hindsight.

It was kind of shocking to see the guns securely tucked away in their waistbands.

That said, once the nazis/insurrectionists breached the first perimeter, the cops probably figured (correctly) that they were outgunned. Can you imagine the carnage? It would have been terrible.
