A Georgia woman known as 'Burnitdown' portends what the Trump movement is becoming

https://wapo.st/39oIV0u (gift article--not behind paywall)

Six years into the grass-roots movement unleashed by Donald Trump in his first presidential campaign, Angela Rubino is a case study in what that movement is becoming. Suspicious of almost everything, trusting of almost nothing, believing in almost no one other than those who share her unease, she has in many ways become a citizen of a parallel America — not just red America, but another America entirely, one she believes to be awash in domestic enemies, stolen elections, immigrant invaders, sexual predators, the machinations of a global elite and other fresh nightmares revealed by the minute on her social media scrolls. She is known online as “Burnitdown.”

She is also among the people across the country willing to do whatever they can to ensure that the imagined enemies of the United States are defeated in the 2022 midterm elections and beyond. From school boards to state houses to Congress, their goal is to take political territory, and for evidence that this is possible, they look to northwest Georgia Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, whose first-time candidacy two years ago defined the fringe of the Republican Party and who is now running for reelection as one of its standard bearers.

“The representative of the 14th Congressional District of America” is how one local Republican has described Greene, whose district is mostly White, mostly rural and has been long abandoned by national Democrats.

“The smartest district in the U.S.A.” is how Greene has described her followers.

This is the district I live in. I find this piece truly terrifying.

Our congressman, Andrew Clyde, is probably even more demented than Greene. He just keeps a much lower profile.

I have a family friend who who lives there, he's liberal as can be — I was visiting last summer and we went into town, him in his Perdue tee and me in my Cat Lovers Against White Supremacy one…

…he was armed, and given the reaction we got I don't blame him. The meanest, nastiest, reddest place I've ever been.

Doug Collins, of first impeachment performance, seem capable of serving his constituents when it coincides with his interests. He failed to call down lightening on the diabolical proceeding, though, and is out.

I don't see how a NASA shirt is signaling anything.

People across all demographics have nostalgia for NASA.

It ate up a lot of resources for what initially started out as a covert weenie-wagging contest -- those Mercury and Gemini capsules sat atop intercontinental ballistic missiles -- but ended up inspiring millions in the possibilities of the scientific process and the pursuit of knowledge. It also showed the level of accomplishment humans can attain when we all work together, suppressing immature selfishness for common goals. It also required faith in government.

Apart from the weenie-wagging, those other things are viewed with a jaundiced eye by many in today's right wing.

If I can't get what I want then the rest of you can't have it either.

I find a lot of logic in this satanic principal: When walking in open territory, bother no one. If someone bothers you, ask him to stop. If he does not stop, destroy him. With the caveat that "destroy" does not mean kill. If you want or choose to be a miserable cur, keep it to yourself.

You (us) can't always get what you (we) want.

You see, you've missed the entire premise of the new conservative Republican mantra. I'll put it down so you can remember it in the future.

You have to follow my rules, but you can't tell me what to do.

Example, you get pregnant, you can't get an abortion (or prenatal care, adoption help, and so forth). But if there's a pandemic, you can't make me wear a mask.

Got it? Great!

Read that late last night. She's truly bonkers. Just plain batshit nuts.

I know a lot of people can't take this advice and that breaks my heart, but if you are able, my advice is leave. Vote with your feet. We lived the vast majority of our lives in the southeast, some of it in districts not terribly dissimilar from GA-14. Some years ago we shook the dust off our feet and moved north. Best move we've ever made and could kick ourselves for not doing it earlier. In an economy with virtually zero unemployment, there couldn't be a better time.

To have a society they do understand, they'd want to return it to the feudal relationships of the dark ages, rule of force and rule of men.

In that world, even MTG would have to go down.

Democrats haven't abandoned that district -- that district has abandoned Democrats, because they don't understand what Democrats know it takes to run a civilized, modern society. Because they don't know how things work. In the land of the blind, the one-eyed MTG is queen.

These people are so horrible. I'm surrounded by a goodly amount of them, too. One reason why I just stay home and read all the time.

Edit to add: I've signed several petitions to have charges brought against MTG and to keep her out of office. Don't seem to have done much good.
