Senators strike bipartisan gun deal, heralding potential breakthrough.
'A bipartisan group of senators announced Sunday that it had reached a tentative agreement on legislation that would pair modest new gun restrictions with significant new mental health and school security investments a deal that could put Congress on a path to enacting the most significant national response in decades to acts of mass gun violence.
Twenty senators 10 Democrats and 10 Republicans signed a statement announcing the framework deal. That indicated that the agreement could have enough GOP support to defeat a filibuster, the Senate supermajority rule that has impeded prior gun legislation. . .
Sen. Chris Murphy (Conn), the lead Democratic negotiator, said in an interview Sunday that the compromise would have detractors on both the right and the left but that it would ultimately make a meaningful difference in combating gun violence.
This is also the moment where we break the logjam. This is the moment where this 30-year impasse is broken, Murphy added. I think folks are really anxious about the state of violence in this country, and they really want Washington to show that it can deliver.'>>>

(10,014 posts)Congress, not because 10 Dems and 10 GQPers agreed to discuss some issues for a potential bill that may not pass and never be implemented.

(7,668 posts)Supposedly -
The agreement includes funding to bolster mental health, enhanced background checks for people under 21, red flag laws and school security measures. It would also close the boyfriend loophole, which would stop people from buying a gun if they are convicted of abuse against their partner.
Bolster Mental Health - exactly how do you do that?
Enhanced Background checks - HR1112 [2019] and HR1446 [2021] both passed the House - same?
Red Flag Laws - who decides- State or Federal? Confiscation?
School Security measures - really vague. Could be more guns, guards, who pays?

(25,559 posts)Not much details.
I wanted the age raised to 21.
One thing behind the Enhanced Background Checks: It decreases impulsiveness
I think the GOP was against the 21 age for numerous issues, however one rationale was that, "If they are old enough to serve in the military, they can own guns".

(7,637 posts)I hope are enough gun safety measures together with the mental health and school safety which they seem to be placing an emphasis upon.
If that's the case then it's great, if not then this would allow the GOP to claim they did something, and any further progress will be impossible. I understand that the assault weapon ban was a nonstarter, hopefully whatever red flag laws and enhanced background checks they agreed upon are significant.

(15,555 posts)I am not optimistic that what they've agreed to will amount to a hill of beans when it comes to stopping mass shootings, but then we won't know that until it's voted on and becomes law and then tally up whatever carnage happens after that.

(7,668 posts)steps it will simply allow the GOP to claim they are addressing the gun problem when in reality are just taking the pressure off of them by ignoring the real issues and not meaningfully addressing the problem.....which is guns 🔫🔫🔫🔫
We don't have more mentally ill people than any other nation but we do have more handguns and WMDs.
Once again we celebrate a nothing burger.....I guess we just all need to buy bullet-proof vests for our family but it is too damn HOT here in Texas.
So we celebrate the Senate doing what is politically easy instead of what the people want? Weird.
