I will concede that my instincts are often crude and I often am tempted to call Trump supporters all sorts of vulgar names. But, I am trying to come up with terms that express my displeasure with these folks but don't quite qualify as obscene perjoratives.
After considering several possibilities, I have settled on "cowardly fascist scum".
Is that too wimpy?
Some of the alternatives I rejected peeled paint off our wall and stunned several guppies in a tank across the room.

(9,984 posts)I am, however, unsuitably foul-mouthed for a grandmother, as my spousal unit reminds me on occasion. I do try to rein it in when in the presence of the younger grandchildren, however.
I am also exceedingly sarcastic and snarky, which I don't necessarily consider negative qualities. And yes, I consider "cowardly fascist scum" rather wimpy and suitable for places where one might get censored otherwise.

(6,535 posts)but I guess that second one probably counts as obscene, whether it's taken as a pejorative or not...like I could shout, "hey, fuckstick!" and wave cheerfully and I might be talking to a friendly acquaintance or something, right?

(11,740 posts)In the context that you are describing the situation, I think the use of the word "cruel" would not be accurate. Cruelty in this case would imply willfully looking to cause pain and suffering onto others. While calling someone a name, might cause upset or hurt feelings, the Trump supporter would not necessarily be in a situation where your words would cause harm. They likely don't care about your opinion of them. Sure cursing and name calling are not necessarily pro-social activities. As you said though, you are expressing your displeasure, at a situation that is likely causing you psychic pain.
Call them what you will. Just be aware of potential social consequences.
I just don't think that calling people, who are not necessarily marginalized or vulnerable, constitutes cruelty.
