Wingnuts are touting the QAnon woman's win as a "Red Wave" thing, but not that simple.
Where to start: This is in Border region south TX, Dem reliable congresscritter VELA (unaccountably resigned months before end of term "to lobby" ) and his district was Repuke Gerrymandered, where meanwhile the neighboring district congresscritter Vicente GONZALEZ will move over as the Dem nominee in November for the full term to THIS district since his own was Gerrymandered more Repuke. GONZALEZ is not so bad as CUELLAR up the river to Laredo? So this special election is for about six months of VELA's old term. The seat has been Dem for 40 years and (might?) flip back in the November election. ABBUTT set up this Special Election along California lines, with all parties running together against one another.

.... Flores won the race and flipped the district red after Rep. Filemon Vela (D-TX) resigned in March and vacated the seat. Flores, who has made controversial statements in the past, will become the first Mexican-born congresswoman to serve in the House of Representatives.
Flores sparked controversy for including QAnon-related hashtags in her social media posts. She has repeatedly posted the QAnon hashtag and #Q on Twitter and on Facebook, including in a Facebook ad. On Instagram, she has also repeatedly posted the QAnon slogan, reported Media Matters for America, which cataloged her various posts.
Musk appeared unbothered by Floress past social media posts and tweeted his support for her and the GOP takeover of the House in November: ....

(25,555 posts)He could have waited until November. He knew what Abbott would do. This is how we run special elections in Texas. I've never seen it any other way.

(70,741 posts)national Dems didn't want to splurge cash for a six months' slot, also that it's not a sure thing GONZALEZ can win in November because "veterans and Catholics aren't in line any more." But GONZALEZ couldn't have run in a Special, could he - would have to resign his current slot?
Great, just great.

(25,555 posts)Gonzalez could campaign if Vela was still in office. Happens all the time!
Gonzalez did not want to run in the special and I don't blame him for that.

(70,741 posts)Doesn't an incumbent have to resign to run for a different office?
LeftInTX
(25,555 posts)It's also a redistricting issue. Gonzales is smart not to run in the special. He would have lost. New map goes into affrect for the November election. However, Vela was dumb to bail out.
UTUSN
(70,741 posts)the issue is: incumbent (in another district) /GONZALEZ would have had to resign his incumbent district to run in Special other district.

(25,555 posts)I don't know the rules. We do have people in office who run for other offices. But it's not a different district of the same office. It's another office altogether. Gonzales would have gotten himself in a mess had he attempted the special election.

(70,741 posts)GONZALEZ would have had to resign his current office to run in the Special other-office.

(22,270 posts)There is often a run off because half the world signs up to run.
Can't blame Abbut for this one, it is existing Texas election law and has been for at least 20 years.

(32,093 posts)Like people, mostly Dems, got knocked off of the voter rolls without being told? This IS Texas, after all.

(70,741 posts)with even worse turnout.
Plus Repukes spent a million carpet bombing political ads while the Dem only hundred grand because the national party didnt find it cost effective to spend more for a six month term.
And the repukes WANTED it BAD. Never underestimate the fire in the belly. Hope the november Dem WANTS it.
