A 70-year-old woman who was trampled to death by an elephant later had her body stampeded over by the very same wild animal.

Maya Murmu was out collecting water in Raipal village, Eastern India when the escaped elephant came out of nowhere and trampled her on Thursday morning.

She later died in hospital of her injuries, Rasgovindpur police station inspector Lopamudra Nayak said.

Then that evening the elephant returned as the 70-year-old's body lay on top of her funeral pyre.

It took her body down, trampled her again, threw her around and went off into the night, according to the Press Trust of India.

Maybe the elephant mistook her for someone else? Awful way to go, at any rate.

horrible or intensely threatening to that elephant or members of its herd.

Elephants suffer PTSD from such violence. The NYT has a great article on it years ago and it has been well documented (and increasing).

Not to make light of a sad story, but I kinda trust the elephant's judgement.

after killing an old woman gathering water from the village tube well, he returned, with the herd by some accounts, and rampaged around the village for a while. A woman who couldn't run away with the others saved herself by climbing a tree. Apparently elephant attacks aren't unheard of. If authorities act, I hope they're able to identify and cull this one and not the whole herd.

RIP.
