"conservative" = resistant to quick change in how society works.

"progressive" = willing to inflict chaos to put change into place quickly, to "progress" to the sort of society they want.

Technically, Republicans are Right-progressive. Democrats are centrist-conservative, leaning toward left-conservative.

That the terms are applied and used opposite their meaning in everyday speech only serves to muddy the waters as much as terms like Milton Friedman's mid-century "neo-liberalism" aka Reaganomics.

14. If I remember right, Pence wrote a letter

or statement to the effect that he would not comply with Trump's plan. AFAIK this was not a secret, confiddntial statement, but the mob at the Capitol would not have known about it. Too busy attacking Capitol police.

Then Trump tweeted about Pence refusing to help save the election and how disappointed he was with Pence. Several members of the groups attacking the Capitol were checking their Twitter feeds and announced to the mob that Pence was a traitor.

The rest is history.

... because Mike Pence refused to get into the getaway car with secret service agents he didn't know. Their plan was to take him away from the Capitol - not to kill him of course, but to keep him from reconvening the electoral confirmation.

If Mike had left the premises with the secret service agents, then Chump probably would have called off the crazy protesters, because then he could get Plan B going. That was their plan to throw out the electoral votes from PA, MI, WI, AZ the swing states and it would have been enough to throw Biden's confirmation into question. In other words it would have been a major FUBAR - which was exactly what Chump wanted.
