Along the lines of the old saying "If you want someone to really listen to you, don't yell. Instead, whisper".
I'm sure he had a specific tactic in mind, but his cadence sure as hell caught my attention.
In a strange way, it pissed me off, but it made me listen.

(15,124 posts)And had some things to do this afternoon - so listened to the second part on the radio. It was somewhat difficult to stay focused on his words by watching, but I was riveted to what he had to say on the radio. Odd, but fascinating stuff.

(17,444 posts)"watch" TV, but I do have it on in my home office, for company I guess. When sitting at my desk, my back is turned to the TV, but a few seconds after I heard him speak, turned around to watch the TV a bit, and then turned back around to face my desk and continue working.
But I listened to every word.
