By Brad Reed
A Jesuit school in Worcester, Massachusetts can no longer identify as a Catholic institution due to its display of a rainbow "Pride" flag and a "Black Lives Matter" flag.
Boston 25 News reports that the Diocese of Worcester has stripped the local Nativity School of its Catholic status over the display of both flags, which it says go against Catholic teachings.
"These symbols embody specific agendas or ideologies [that] contradict Catholic social and moral teaching," Bishop Robert McManus said in justifying his decision. "It is my contention that the Gay Pride flag represents support of gay marriage and actively living a LGBTQ+ lifestyle."
Thomas McKenney, the president of the Nativity School, has defended flying the flags as showing "support for making our communities more just and inclusive" and showing that "all are welcome at Nativity."

Bishop says school not Catholic after refusing to take down flags
A bishop has declared that a central Massachusetts school "may no longer identify itself as Catholic" because it refuses to remove Black Lives Matter and Pride flags it began flying on campus last year.
Arguing that the flags "embody specific agendas and ideologies (that) contradict Catholic social and moral teaching," Bishop Robert McManus of the Diocese of Worcester issued a decree on Thursday punishing the Nativity School of Worcester, a tuition-free private middle school that serves about 60 boys from under-resourced communities.
The decree prohibits the school from calling itself Catholic and prevents Mass and sacraments from taking place on school grounds.
In a statement, the school said it began displaying the flags in Jan. 2021 at the request of its students, the majority of whom, it noted, are people of color.

(6,240 posts)The Jesuits report to the head of the order who reports to the Pope. They are not bound to local dioceses.
You go Jesuits!

(24,504 posts)flags flying. Why doesn't the Diocese go after them and take away their Catholic" status? Because they are a bunch conservative bullies and that would start a real war within the Church.
Back in the 70s when I was there, people like Dan Berrigan and Micheal Harrington were SJWs that were celebrated for their activism.
