Grift made Donald Trump. Grift made the modern-day Republican Party. It seems almost inevitable that the two would eventually come together to present the greatest threat to the nation in more than a century: January 6, 2020.
Few of the revelations unveiled by the Jan. 6 committee on Monday about Trumps fundraising were really new. After all, months after the event, former Trump fixer and attorney Michael Cohen declared Trumps claims of election fraud the greatest grift in U.S. history. He said that Trump has made it very clear that he is grifting off of the American people, these supporters, these individuals that are just sending money to him at record levels.
But the connection the committee made to that griftthe Big Rip-off, as Rep. Zoe Lofgren termed itto the violent and horrifying events on Jan. 6: that clicked. As did the case the committee seems to be making for felony wire fraud. Thats the takeaway from one prosecutor, anyway: New York state Attorney General Letitia James. The new details revealed tonight related to January 6 are disturbing, James tweeted Monday. Its my duty to investigate allegations of fraud or potential misconduct in New York. This incident is no exception.

Thats the very dangerous side of the tradition of grift that the Republicans have been perfecting for the past 60 years, as author and historian Rick Perlstein told The Washington Posts Greg Sargent. This phenomenon of conservative Republican leaders seeing their constituencies as a pool of marks to squeeze money out of really does go back to the beginnings of the conservative takeover of the Republican Party in the 1960s, Perlstein said. As is so often the case in the Republican Party under the Trumpist reign, it takes normal historical patterns of behavior and turns them up to 11.
Now we face the phenomenon of millions of people, many of them armed, who are identifying their own safety, comfort and flourishing as human beings with the political success of Donald Trump and his allies. [ ] If you think the stakes are whether civilization itself survives, and that youre dealing with a cabal of shadowy enemies, of course youre licensed to use any means to stop them, Perlstein said.
If the stakes are racial replacement, and the shadowy enemies are the Jews said to be controlling the replacement of Whites, then its okay to kill Jews. Its okay to shoot up Black churches. Its okay to shoot up a Walmart.
Or its okay to attack the U.S. Capitol and attempt to overthrow Congress and threaten to kill the vice president.

(70,235 posts)numbers are processed in the brain very, very differently. $1/4 bil to committee that didnt exist is gonna turn heads.
and the "i told you so"s are gonna be knee deep in a lot of living rooms.

(9,898 posts)The party of nothing but throwing shit against a wall (LITERALLY) to see what will stick might get some pushback on this "bread and butter" issue, unlike gas pump money going to oligarchs (who are capitalists, and hence, God), but $250 mil being defrauded from them for an orgasmic money bath by blatant crooks.
The grifters have humiliated, manipulated and sent their minions to the slammer, and "it's all good" but such a blatant act might be the flash point, where their disdain for he rubes crosses the RUBE I CON.
ooh, insight. May have to make a thread of that one.
Just keep this in mind.
Dick Nixon didn't say "I am not a Democrat"
He said:

(6,231 posts)in November we can stop them. Otherwise a MAGA repub controlled House is going to investigate Fauci and Hunter Biden. They already said that they will impeach Joe Biden. WTF is wrong with Americans.

(36,137 posts)Other states might consider following James' lead. Couldn't funders of false claims -- even debunked and proven lies that led to wire fraud at the president level, for instance -- be politicos charged under laws that identify similar false claims as rackets? Or couldn't they be charged as running a political network of rackets?
Because if the RNC keeps raising money based on the same claims tfg might charged with, they're kinda like asking to be labeled a network of aiders and abettors in a racket disguised as a 'fund raiser.'
But what do I know about all this shady, grey area stuff.
