Looks like gun deal is now on life support as GOPs demand Dems loosen the part of the bill that restricts domestic abusers ability to buy guns.Link to tweet
History of domestic gun violence:
Around 4.5 million women in the United States have been threatened with a gun, and nearly 1 million women have been shot or shot at by an intimate partner. Over half of all intimate partner homicides are committed with guns. Indeed, a woman is five times more likely to be murdered when her abuser has access to a gun.

(13,516 posts)their supporters are much more important than children. I think if their own children were murdered at school, they would still not pass gun legislation. I hate to say that, but I believe it.

(40,212 posts)Make an untenable demand that the other side can not agree to and voilà, no deal.
The republicans are snakes, dishonest brokers, and con artists. No one should be surprised.

(81,297 posts)I suspect they had no intention of cooperating. They just wanted to put on a PR show so they look like they care about addressing the gun madness in America. They really dont. Never did. They dont care about women OR womens issues.
And I think we all ought to start saying that, out loud and repeatedly. Relentlessly.
It reminds me of that ongoing theme in the Peanuts cartoon strip, in which Lucy repeatedly vows to hold the football for Charlie Brown to kick, but EVERY DAMN TIME, still yanks the football away at the last second, while yet again, Charlie Brown crashes onto the ground on his back with a big thud. EVERY DAMN TIME! And yet he keeps trusting g her assurances and believes her, and gets royally HAD, EVERY DAMN TIME!
And the Democrats get royally HAD, EVERY DAMN TIME, on this. WHY do we keep trusting Republicans on this??? WHY????? I keep hoping our side of the aisle would WAKE UP!!!

(2,113 posts)That was the only part of the proposal - the only part - that I thought might make a small difference. So naturally, it has to go.
When tf are we going to understand that repubs DO NOT, WILL NOT, CAN NOT negotiate in good faith?

Fuck the republicans.
https://www.cbsnews.com/amp/news/sacramento-shooting-church-father-daughters/
Four people were killed Monday evening when a father fatally shot three of his children and one other person at a church in Sacramento, California, local officials said. David Mora Rojas, 39, died by suicide after shooting the four others, officials said.
The victims were identified by the coroner's office on Tuesday as Samantha Mora Gutierrez, 10; Samarah Mora Gutierrez, 9; Samia Mora Gutierrez, 13; and Nathaniel Kong, 59, CBS Sacramento reported.
The shooting happened inside a church called The Church in Sacramento at approximately 5 p.m. local time. Sgt. Rod Grassman said that Kong, who was associated with the church, was chaperoning the children during a supervised visit with their father, who was the subject of a restraining order by his estranged girlfriend.

(15,540 posts)Just like they don't care if kids get shot and killed in school. They truly do think women should go back to the 50's when men told them what to do and they waited on them hand and foot and if they didn't, well, you just punch them in the face or twist their arm until it snaps or push them down the stairs or shoot them. They see nothing wrong with that.
Why any woman would vote Republican is beyond me. Can't they see that they hate women?

(18,656 posts)Earlier this week there were many posts that derided this bill to the point of saying Congressional Democrats should vote against it. It was implied no action was better than weak action; especially if it could help Republicans in the midterms.

(6,699 posts)cornyn is bought and paid for by the nra and corporate puppet masters. So pathetic the Democrats ever played like something would ever change.
Initially I thought the gQp stooges might give some token, meaningless concessions...but even that was too much to ask.
Love each other, because once you step outside your doors, there's a chance you will be some disgruntled, frustrated white male's target.
This is insane. Maybe this is a blessing. We need to vote out EVERY FUCKUNG NRA STOOGE, and get assault weapons, large capacity magazines BANNED under penalty of jail and confiscation. Buy back at 50%, then make them contraband and lick up violators. No persons under 21 can purchase anything other than personal hunting/ sport guns..to be decided.
This is just fucking insane. The fucking gun manufacturers can buy them back..and gun dealers can chip in as well.

(7,017 posts)from assault weapons ban, serious red flag federal program, raise age to 21, waiting period before delivery that a strong majority of Americans are in favor of to some watered down useless smoke and mirrors bill to nothing. Were Democratic party members even involved in this supposed committee ? When the next mass shooting that involves enough children to garner attention of the BREAKING NEWS media what will our excuse be then ? And who will believe it ? We HAD public opinion on our side and this is what we end up with. I am not shocked because from the beginning I could see nothing would be done again. If you want people to vote you have to give them SOMETHING to vote for.
Sorry, those that give up and don't vote are the problem. We are living in a very effed up world right now. They don't need to be given a reason to vote, they need to vote for themselves and future generations, their own children that in itself is reason enough. We need a huge majority to get things passed.
kacekwl
(7,017 posts)you have to give them a reason to vote for you.

(83,776 posts)I didn't love my Rep. He was a D, I and an R, yet ran as a Democrat. I voted for him because there was no other choice. He has been a pretty good congressman so far.
I don't need more than a D after their name, I will vote for our future. Those that don't? Welp, they can't complain if they don't vote. If we lose the house and or Senate this country is screwed. Not enough people vote in a primary. Fact is we need a blue wave to survive.
Let's make that happen.
