Yes, world gas prices are up. But not to the degree to which we're paying and getting fucked.
The oil barons of America (and the world) are cleaning up. But they also know that high prices at the pump will fuck Joe Biden and the Democratic Party. (Many morons really think that people in the congress and the White House control these prices.)
A short story: In 1979, Jimmy Carter was fucked by both high gas prices, and Reagan's campaign conspiring with Iran to not release American hostages until after the presidential election. (They didn't teach this in history class, but if you don't know about it, google Iran American hostages reagan interference.)
Ronald Reagan won the presidency and that was, perhaps, the start of the insanity that infects today's Republican Party.
However, please try to let every idiot you know that Joe and the Dems don't control oil prices.
The truth is that, many of those who own the oil, also own many members of the Republican Party.

(182,823 posts)Yes that was the old white men stepping back in a saying ENOUGH! Were back in charge. And everything went downhill for most people.
Too many rights and too many losses for them in the 60s and 70s. Who do these people think they ARE?!?!
Their fight against climate change is basically them keeping oil alive. Oil gives them money to make sure oil is alive.

Without Reagan, Gingrich, and a few other world-class malicious pricks, I don't think Trump would have been electable.
(Actually, Reagan was an amiable imbecile who was a front man for those around him who controlled him, and actually ran the government.)

(6,679 posts)I have no doubt there are shenanigans going on in the name of greed and also to control populations. In the US the Republicans are certainly using it to hang around Biden. However, in truth there's something bigger than all this at play, because there is a global disconnect between the cost of the oil verses the cost at the pump.
Is it simply that they aren't pricing it at the pump based on costs but on the gambling in "gas futures"? Seems like they've done that awhile now but the curve was reasonably connected to crude oil prices. Something changed. I don't know what.

(15,041 posts)absolutely no one in the entire world could stop them from charging whatever they wanted to charge. It seems that they should have always known this. Perhaps more countries in the world becoming autocratic have allowed them to buy off any opposition to their concerns that they will get push back.
Right now, the only ones pushing back are those of us around the world, standing at gas pumps, and watching the fucking pump nibble away at our credit cards. But we're powerless. Our "push back" is meaningless.
My guess is that, right now, the oil pricks are figuring how to control what's left of the world's drinkable water supply.

(4,986 posts)and many have not come back online. This is part of the increased cost.
I have often wondered why Biden couldn't invoke the Defense Production Act to force oil companies to produce more gasoline, thus bringing the price down....

(6,679 posts)I didn't even think about with a world of Covid and travel down all the way around the need for petroleum products dropped tremendously. Getting mothballed facilities back up and running isn't just flipping a switch.
