The new Texas Republican party platform calls homosexuality an abnormal lifestyle choice, says President Biden "was not legitimately elected," and says Texas students should learn about the Humanity of the Preborn Child.
People stand up and boo U.S. Sen. John Cornyn while he speaks about potential gun legislation during the Republican Party of Texas 2022 convention in the George R. Brown Convention Center in Houston on Friday, June 17, 2022.

Texas Republican Convention calls Biden win illegitimate and rebukes
Some 5,500 delegates approved a party platform that also calls for ending the federal income tax, requiring education about fetal gestation and limiting the Legislatures right to regulate guns.

HOUSTON Meeting at their first in-person convention since 2018, Texas Republicans on Saturday acted on a raft of resolutions and proposed platform changes to move their party even further to the right, including declaring that President Joe Biden was not legitimately elected and voting on whether to update the party platform to say that homosexuality is an abnormal lifestyle choice and that Texas schoolchildren should be taught to learn about the Humanity of the Preborn Child.
They also formally rebuked their states senior senator, John Cornyn, for leading bipartisan legislation on gun safety in the aftermath of the school shooting in Uvalde.
The actions capped a convention that highlighted how adamantly opposed the partys most active and vocal members are to compromising with Democrats or moderating on social positions, even as the state has grown more diverse and Republicans margins in statewide elections have shrunk slightly in recent years.
Votes on the platform were collected at the end of the party's three-day convention in which party activists moved to add multiple items to their official platform. As the convention closed, two separate sets of ballots one allowing delegates to choose eight of 15 legislative priorities and another allowing delegates to vote on the 275 platform planks were gathered. Those will now need to be tallied and certified in Austin, but it is rare for a plank to be rejected, according to party spokesman James Wesolek.
The convention reinforced the extent to which former President Donald J. Trumps unfounded claims of a stolen election continue to resound among the party faithful even though his claims have repeatedly been debunked, including by many of his own former aides, and after a week of televised hearings about the Trump supporters who stormed the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021.

(82,849 posts)Every lunatic ranting, every grievance (real or imagined) from the past two years, every ridiculous utterance from their stone-stupid supporters, is getting a full airing and adoption. Is this really what a majority of Texans think and endorse?

In our Democracy you can get less votes than your opponent and still win...as Fat Donnie did. Add in the makeup of the Senate and the deck is totally stacked against Democrats.
And here we are on Life Support.

(3,647 posts)Nope. Talking about a fetus doesn't require action. It's a low overhead throw-away talking point. Poverty and homelessness requires looking less fortunate people in the eye and extending your hand to help.
