(14,648 posts)"convicted in a Senate impeachment trial" which would never happen with all the MAGAts in the Senate. After all, they didn't care at all what TFG did and apparently still don't.

(26,760 posts)Each chamber has the ability to expel a member with 2/3 backing the expulsion but impeachment isnt an option.

(146,333 posts)the easiest way is to vote for someone else in their next election. Ron Johnson will be getting that treatment this year.
Buh-bye, Ron...

SECTION 4. The President, Vice President and all civil Officers of the United States, shall be removed from Office on Impeachment for, and Conviction of, Treason, Bribery, or other high Crimes and Misdemeanors.
The Senate has concluded that members of Congress (Representatives and Senators) are not "civil officers" for purposes of impeachment.
Congressmen & women are expelled, not impeached.
However, a 2/3rs majority is needed for that to happen, and there is no way in hell that's going to happen with this current Senate.

(115,869 posts)Senators themselves can't be impeached. Article II, Section 4 of the Constitution says: "The President, Vice President and all civil Officers of the United States, shall be removed from Office on Impeachment for, and Conviction of, Treason, Bribery, or other high Crimes and Misdemeanors." Since the Federalist Papers noted that the power of impeachment serves as a check on the executive and judicial branches, "civil officers" has not been interpreted in modern times as including members of Congress. The Senate can expel its own members; otherwise they can be gotten rid of only by voting them out of office. The Blount situation referenced above occurred while the Senate was in the process of expelling him on its own and wouldn't be used now as precedent for impeaching a senator.
