They've gutted New York's gun laws.
New York City has always been a place where it's almost impossible to buy a gun unless you can demonstrate an important need.
And the idea of New York being "a dangerous place" has always been bullshit. Given the population, there are probably fewer deaths per person in NY than there are in Wyoming (which has a population of a few dozen people).
The majority of the Supreme Court has blood on their hands and will have until the day they die. Fuck them. I mean, FUCK THEM.

(5,559 posts)Still going off summaries but it appears that they set a much stricter standard for what it allowed on 2nd amendment challenges.
I thought it was strict scrutiny at first (requiring laws to be written as narrowly as possible) but it's not that after reading Breyer's dissent.
It might be worse.
Thomas is requiring that historical context be considered for if a gun law is constitutional. This is new and without comparison. It also sets the table for demolishing just about everything, as the first piece of federal gun restrictions was in the 1930's. So no law will pass this originalist test of constitutionalism.

(15,070 posts)After all, a rocket launcher is just "a big gun." Ain't it?
And if rocket launchers are big guns, can that definition be stretched to virtually everything in the current arsenal of weapons? I don't know.
But I do know than the majority of Supreme Court justices are, at a minimum, wrong. And at a maximum, they're mentally fucked up beyond repair. And they're doing their best to destroy a sane civilization.

(3,873 posts)There is no need to demonstrate an important need to purchase a firearm in NY State.
This case was about concealed carry, not purchases.

(15,070 posts)NY state laws are looser. There was no way to get a carry permit in the city unless your profession, or some special circumstance required it.
I never worried about getting shot in NYC. Florida, where I now live, is a far different story.
Zeitghost
(3,873 posts)As I noted, there is no requirement for anyone in NY State, including residents of NYC to demonstrate a specific need to purchase a firearm.

(4,913 posts)I live in NY, the governor is going to fight this decision. She has lots of ways to fight back. Their decision has loopholes you can drive a truck through.
She can make it tougher to get a permit in many ways that does not violate the courts decision. She can it make more expensive is just one example.
