General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsOn this sad and outrageous day, any thoughts on who leaked the draft Dobbs opinion?
I am still wondering about this. Why was it done and who did it?
I fully appreciate that the decision is the most important thing, and it's awful. But the leak is still important. For example, was it done to make sure that John Roberts didn't dissent, but concurred, adding the sixth vote in favor of repealing Roe.
Also, does anyone have a comparison between the final decision today and the leaked draft decision? That could be telling in looking at the changes.

(1,962 posts)They leaked. People got outraged. It got a "Protect the Extreme Court justices!" bill fast-tracked, just in time for the actual opinion to come out.
They knew we'd see red. They knew people would hit the streets. But if they ambushed us? Well, no "Protect the Supremes!" bill would've been in place. So the leak was calculated, 3D chess to get their asses protection before all hell broke loose.

(7,715 posts)One issue: it was six, not five. Roberts concurred, so he's part of the majority on the decision itself, as opposed to the rationale of the decision.

(1,962 posts)Despite him writing an opinion that agreed with a large part of the immoral majority, he himself ultimately voted no. The actual votes on what gutted Roe and Casey both wound up being 5-4, with Roberts voting with the three liberals, despite his opinion.
Not that is matters. 6-3, 5-4, both just as ugly for this nation and its women.
I still think one of the fascists who believes it's their job to revoke rights and turn people into second-class citizens who was behind the leak, though. They would've been scrambling to take steps to protect the extremists right now - as opposed to already taking those steps - without the leak.
Another fine example of these thugs playing us for fools - whether it's the leak, or lying during confirmation hearings to get confirmed in the first place.

(52,166 posts)he voted to uphold the law but not overturn Roe. As to who leaked, I think it was someone in favor of the decision who was making sure it kept its votes.

(7,715 posts)It is very curious as to the motivation of the leaker. There are some interesting thoughts in this thread.
Again, it's a terrible day, but the purpose of the leak, and the identity of the leaker, is something to keep in mind going forward.
