Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsCould Indian Reservations open abortion clinics that would be outside the jurisdiction of the
States and not be affected by the new ruling? Could they service non Indigenous women? State laws regarding crimes on Indigenous land appear to be extremely confusing grey matter.

(86,802 posts)And what makes you think the US government can just move onto a reservation and put up facilities?
Each acre of Indian land is INDIAN LAND, sovereign from US govenrment jurisdiction in 90% of all concerns there.
IF this idea were to become a plan, it can ONLY happen with agreement of the tribal governments who hold jurisdiction over these properties.
Seriously, what you are saying is very much like saying,
"Can't the federal government (regardless of agency) build facilities in my neighbor's yard?"
Sorry, it's just so colonial mindset that I just can't even...

(21,616 posts)Native sovereignty. It might be that some tribal governments would be interested in providing this care for members of the tribe.
But for them to take in non Native people would be expensive and overwhelming for many tribes.

(86,802 posts)Long before anything else.
If new facilities that would benefit the effected tribe and fed investment is included, they might be able to negotiate something. Reservations face encroachment battles every year, from investment or extractive industries to state and local governments, it's endless.
If there could be economic benefit, like jobs and tax revenue along with access, I could see where a few tribes might see it as a worthwhile.
And that's the only way that could work.

(22,448 posts)it's harmful. Please read up on this issue as well as the issue of colonization. Since when has the federal government ever come onto reservations with the best interest of the residents there?

(2,343 posts)I have to believe there's a lot of revenue from providing abortion services. It could help Native Americans and, of course, women.

(33,643 posts)However obviously this shouldn't be some kind of federal requirement but rather a choice of tribes that DO have the necessary authority in their lands.
It's not 'a solution' but in fact, we may need a whole bunch of solutions, and some tribes may be in a position to help ... but they shouldn't be forced to, and we shouldn't expect miracles here.
We need a LOT more than just convincing some Native tribes to help of their own accord, put it like that.

(3,414 posts)I totally agree with you, the US has never been truly supportive of Indigenous peoples. The Indian Health Service sterilized thousands of American Indian women without their permission. Native Peoples have also had their children taken away by the state for generations, and put in horrendous state or religious schools. There they were prohibited from speaking their languages and subject to physical and psychological abuse, all aimed at ensuring their submission to control.

(42,014 posts)I follow NA activists, and they *are* aware of this suggestion.
A caution for white people. Do not assume or presume anything from the black and BIPOC and indigenous communities. Especially the younger community.
They are tired of being used, then tossed aside with its not convenient to center their needs.
They are, however, very aware from what I understand.

Very aware.
I live within three hours' drive of five reservations, and several more if I went a little further down the road in any direction. I keep up with several folks from many nations and it comes up in conversation.

(14,308 posts)Not all Native Americans are Pro-Choice. Reservations receive about $20 billion a year from Feds. This could be in jeopardy from a Repug-controlled Congress.
Among the myriad obstacles to bringing such ideas to fruition.
