(19,565 posts)We have wind and solar to help carry us over. Winter is scary due to lax winterization and fossil fuels not liking the cold very much if they're not tended to properly.
Summer usually is either storm related, or localized outages due to transformer issues related to wind, fires or critters. In the summer we're mostly like everyone else out there.

(11,477 posts)Since that awful winter one. I had bugged her to get supplies but she didn't think she needed anything. After that winter without even a hot drink or food except what they bought out I sent them a camping stove.
Glad summer is better because she works at home and easier to warm up then cool down.

(19,565 posts)I wasn't in the rolling grid, I had no power at all for over 4 days. It was so cold in my house there was ice in the sinks where I had water dripping (before it stopped) to try and save my pipes. I was cold to my bones even wearing my entire winter wardrobe at the same time.
I went weird, survivalist level, a couple of days in and blocked off an interior room in my home with blankets and was heating up granite stones outside in a chiminea and bringing them into my home and putting them in an outside fire pit inside to warm the room. It worked. I stopped seeing my breath. I boiled water outside for drinking and heated food on my chiminea to eat safely.
I'll never again be able to smell a rose scented candle. I'd been gifted a nice fancy brand one for Xmas just before and I used it for lighting. Just remembering the scent makes me stressed out even now.
I've purchased a natural gas generator after that horror. I also keep a solid supply of emergency supplies on hand. Never will I be so close to freezing to death again in my own home.

(11,477 posts)Why i bought her stove. They have 2 teen boys and they put together all their blankets and sleeping bags and coats and bought coffee out. They went into their car for hours to warm up with the heater. Theirs was out 3-4 days also.
Since I live in Oregon we have woodstove plus our RV is parked outside with gas stove so I am not worried if storm ever does that. I worry more my old air conditioning system will go out one of these summers, but so far so good.

(3,341 posts)Early June heat wave in Dallas and we had about two weeks or so of over-100 every day. On the 20th, power went out for three minutes, and then flickered four times (that I know about) over the course of the next two days. This is when Abbott was gently warning us to prepare for rolling grey-outs.
Just my own observations, but I think a lot of the good ol' boys around here are quietly losing faith in him.
