Coincidence enough they were both close; I believe they hung on to see the 50th anniversary. Jefferson asked his carers "is it the fourth?" as though he had to hang on for it.

One of Adams' last phrases he uttered before passing was "Jefferson still survives."

In reality, Jefferson had passed a few hours earlier.
