(31,028 posts)Safer. I guess Ill have to look it up and I remember seeing figures something like 35,000 for cars and 45,000 for guns. That has changed places since the cars and become so much

(34,074 posts)Drunk driving deaths are a fraction of all traffic accidents.
So at least in 2020 (and likely last year) firearm deaths exceeded drunk driving deaths.

(10,208 posts)But I really thought shootings hadnt caught up with drunk crashes. I guess thats another grey area, not all crashes are due to drunks. But holy shit. The reason I asked was when I was a young reckless guy youd often be told by the police to go have some coffee or something. Then there was a national uproar and laws changed. We need something like that now. Of course the liquor and beer companies didnt lobby congress to avoid restrictions like the NRA does.

Gun related homicides are nearly double the number of deaths caused by drunk drivers.
And that doesn't included suicide or accidental deaths.
If you include all categories of gun related deaths, it's 4 times the number killed by drunk drivers.

(3,302 posts)We don't want them to kill people, so they are safer every year. And even with more miles driven every year, the death number remains about the same, meaning the lethality reduces constantly.
Guns get more dangerous, almost by intention.
