The shootings in Illinois are the public version of "I could shoot someone on Fifth Avenue..."

Trump said (with some atypical veracity) that he could shoot someone down in cold blood on Fifth Avenue in broad daylight and not lose a vote.

Elsewhere in America, shooters can go kill people every few days somewhere in the USA, and the Republicans that put the guns in their hands will not lose a vote.
