Many people have strong feelings about assault weapons and a defense team (he will have a legal defense team) might use that to try to argue bias.

There might also be a straw buyer or gun-lender who needs to be apprehended. Keeping that person in the dark about the rifle might make that person less likely to disappear, and so, easier to catch.
