(23,322 posts)But I believe youre correct. My fear is that the public will become quickly desensitized to the aftermath of AR weapons. Americans are a strange lot. I am losing hope.

Its really scary to go out in public.

(53,035 posts)and we know of all the children slaughtered. That should be enough.

(652 posts)and seeing those images, especially from mass shootings, is the only thing I think will bring the public to their senses.
If it is that horrific to see (which I think it is), imagine how horrific it is to be a victim, or a loved one or a friend, or a bystander.
If those people can be forced to see it, or to live with it, then we all ought to stand with them.
I hope this makes sense.

(22,037 posts)They kill some prominent Republicans.
Republicans don't care about anything until it affects them personally.
When the violence reaches them, we might see some change.
Until then, keep your head down.

(38 posts)That no other rifle round does? its too small a caliber to hunt deer or larger game with in many states. At best its a varmint round. Early in Vietnam when it replaced .308 (not because it was magically deadlier, it was more lightweight so you could carry more) the bullets had issues penetrating foliage and didnt do well when they hit tree limbs. They also tumbled and lost trajectory. We always run straight to assault weapons but dont talk about the majority of gun violence, which is most likely .40 caliber and 9mm. when the media stops overhyping what assault weapons do and look at gun violence as a whole, maybe people will be don paying attention. But I am curious, what do assault weapons do? How about what people do?

(17,549 posts)that is specifically designed to destroy the human body. That isn't worth a damn for hunting for meat, because it renders the meat inedible... The hollow point round is not worth a damn for target shooting either, it is way to pricey. The round is sold to civilians, not to destroy pork shoulders, but to massacre people. In fact, the most destructive round that the video demonstrated is forbidden by the Geneva Convention for use by the military. People buy the most lethal rifle that is available and feed it with the most destructive ammo that they can find because that is "freedom."

(38 posts)I would imagine that most mass shooters choose the cheapest ammo, like lake city m855, so they can have more ammo for more magazines. But once again, compared to almost any hunting round .223 is fairly anemic. And I think the term marketing to massacre people is fairly over dramatic. Again, what about the real culprits, pistols firing 9mm and .40. Its like for some reason we want feel good legislation to stop 3% of the violence and ignore the other 90+ percent of gun violence. Mass shootings are horrible but our message has consistly been how evil the AR is weve lost touch with the real gun issues and how the message is its the gun, but we cant look at or say its people. Its our society. The US is sick, and theyd kill even if they didnt have guns. Why cant we see that the US society is sick. Period. Instead we claim that .223 is some horrendous round, when we ignore the reality its a low end rifle round best for coyotes and smaller. The round of the ranch rifle.
So then all that said why dont we go for the ammo manufacturers making these people massacre rounds, stop lake city from selling their seconds to the public (it is government contract, right) and stop marketing of said firearms. It almost worked for smoking.

(11,100 posts)power of the round. The .223 is not a slightly overgrown .22. This is a large round with a lot of propellant. The entry wound is often the size of a .22 round. The exit wound can be the size of a plate. Any flesh and bone between the entry and the exit will be destroyed. The .223 is not a varmint round. It is a round designed only to kill humans.
I assume you know all of this. Enjoy your stay on DU.

(38 posts)A large round is 45-70 which can anchor an elk or larger animal, and easily create an 11 wound channel. .243, .270, any 30 caliber round is much larger. .223 is a varmint round, its been around quite a while and replaced .222 in 57 or so after being adopted to replace .308 which was heavy and cumbersome. It is a small caliber, and in several states including mine, too small to be used for deer. And yea it was designed for army use, but only as a way to carry more ammo, not a weigh to kill more people. .223 is a fine round for varmints, from prairie dogs to coyotes, as I said it excels as a ranch rifle round. The most common bullet is 62gr, which is small for a rifle round, in contrast 9mm nato is a standard 124gr, one of the most effective lethal rounds historically is a 115gr 357 mag. a 62 gr bullet is by no means a large round. Its a fast round in a rifle because of the powder charge, but we are talking center fire rifles. It replaced the 308 that was 150gr plus.
