Our education system as a whole is worrisome, we're not producing the mathematicians and scientists that our economy is going to need to keep up. But I thought basic literacy was getting better in the US.

but this sounds like blaming the teachers for illiteracy. Maybe I'm reading it wrong.

... it is a mental cut and paste from all the phony support for teachers which vanishes in the real world the instant it comes to money. I support teaches including (a lot) better pay.

facts: teachers need higher pay and we have higher illiteracy, no correlation between the two.
