Fortunately, our credit card companies caught this early, contacted us, replaced the cards, and none of us lost any money.

for avoiding financial disaster when it comes to this BS.
I only use a credit card for all purchases. My debit card has never been swiped or used even once. It's in a drawer around here somewhere and that's where it stays.
Credit cards are just as easily stolen, but when it happens, at least the thieves don't have direct access to your cash that would otherwise take weeks or even months to recover from the bank.
Credit card processors make a lot of money, let them take the risk for you. It just requires strict discipline to make sure it's paid off every week so you don't wind up in debt trouble.
