(1,826 posts)In recent years the media has actually moved away from discussing mass shooters in detail, theres been a lot of acknowledgement that school shooters especially can be influenced by fame of prior shooters (Columbine shooters for example, became folk heroes in some dark circles) and we see this playing out, I literally had to Google to remember the name of the Uvalde shooter yesterday because there had been so little coverage of him vs his victims and the authorities. I wonder why it is in non-school mass shootings that same tactic isnt being pursued. Theres a huge focus on this particular shooter and I do think hes being elevated to the fame position he clearly has been seeking for years.

Not much info about Salvador Ramos was available because he was an oddball who dressed in black and dropped out of school.

(5,170 posts)He talked about the lie, it's all a lie. He took a video of himself in maga suit at trump motorcade, smiling the only smile he shows in any of the other 17 videos he had. All the others showed hate content and mass shooting content in a school room and in public cartoon. He had himself riding his bike downtown Highland Park with emergency buzzer playing in background. He planned it, it's crystal clear in the videos and his uncle said he and his father all lived together in the house, along with he saw his "rap" videos and thought he was a great artist. There is no way ANYONE could watch those videos and not think he wants to mass shoot, MOST OF THE VIDEOS FEATURED MASS SHOOTINGS. The videos were not good, in fact they were hateful, murder, guns and blood.
We have to stop this stochastic terrorism incited by the GOP.

I think mine are pretty safe, being varying degrees of Black and Hispanic, but you can't be too sure. We have to talk about this.

(5,170 posts)I have a teenage son that comes and goes from my home daily goofing around, everyday there is something to address or talk about.
We live in a red county in IL, it's maga land, these kids know this is a Democratic household, but they love to talk to my husband and I about complex issues. I don't parent them because they are not my children, but I challenge their beliefs in conversations and they love it. It's a safe place to talk, with expected high standards of conduct.

(1,535 posts)Pretty unusual for a mass-shooting in America. And came to us creepily close to Sinclair Lewis' prediction of the end of US democracy with flags waving and patriotic music playing.
In another contrarian position to popular thought, I also think it's a very good thing he was captured alive.
Forensic psychiatrists don't get many opportunities to analyze mass-shooters, because mostly they end up dead.
If America is facing a new kind of mass-shooting threat, it would be really useful to get some understanding of what that is -before- the assassins start coordinating their attacks and we get an American version of Krystalnacht.

(6,239 posts)Certainly the authorities and mental health people should investigate him.
But as soon as the MSM starts getting into him at the expense of talking about the victims, I draw the line. People need to hear about the victims, and what happened to them, and how families were affected, and so forth. Minimizing them doesn't do anything to make people aware of the real cost of these murders.

(6,399 posts)Only two of the victims were formally identified with their identities released to the media as of this morning.
The other identities were not released due to families being informed and, quite frankly, putting together who is who.
It's not a MSM issue, it's just the reality of a mass shooting.
