Boris Johnson announced on Thursday that he will quit as Prime Minister, firing the starting gun on the contest to replace him and lead the Tories into the next general election.
The PM told Sir Graham Brady, the chairman of the backbench 1922 committee, that he would stand down and allow a leadership battle so his successor can be in place by October.
He had come under unbearable pressure to quit No 10 after an avalanche of more than 50 ministerial resignations - including half a dozen Cabinet members.
The coup de grace was when the new Chancellor Nadhim Zahawi urged him to go on Thursday morning and the Education Secretary Michelle Donelan quit after only 35 hours in post.

(9,259 posts)5. That he Will Quit as PM
when the Conservative Party has a new leader. In the mean time he is filling Cabinet positions. Barring a vote on the floor of the House of Commons, Boris cannot be forced to offer his resignation to the Queen.

Yet he strongly supported Ukraine. What a mixed message in that regard. But his Brexit policy and the spy thing will be his legacy.
