Cambridge Analytica was founded with a $15 million investment from hedge fund billionaire and GOP megadonor Robert Mercer. Its board included Robert Mercers daughter, Rebekah Mercer, and their longtime associate, Steve Bannon.
The newly published emails indicate that Cambridge Analytica staff understood that they were ultimately working for the Mercers; in fact, the firms New York office was shared with another Mercer venture, Reclaim New York. Cambridge Analytica staff also understood that Mercer-backed super PACs were expected to contract with the firm.

(101,322 posts)Anti-EU feeling had been around in England for decades. It was notable in the 90s, before Putin came to power, and when there was no use of the web by the public (if you want to point a finger at someone then, you can include the "journalism" of Boris Johnson, with many exaggerated stories about EU policy, before he was ever elected). It grew before "social media" was a term. Don't underestimate the ingrained xenophobia in a large proportion of the English. This is centuries old.
Russia did use trolls and bots to spread a Leave message in 2016. How much effect that had is unsure. The ultimate funding of Arron Banks' huge donations to the Leave campaign is still murky. But the assumption by some in this thread that "Britain didn't really support Brexit" doesn't have a basis. It's like saying "Americans never really supported Trump"; it's obvious that a worrying proportion really did, and still do, and it means a lot to them, so they're highly likely to vote/disrupt community meetings/invade Congress to get their way. The right-wing fanatics care a lot about getting their way; many people in the middle don't, and don't do anything to stop them.

(70,520 posts)... and Trump, Facebook, the GOP, Fox News, and God only knows who else going along with it was part of the largest international criminal scams in history. To this day we have members of Congress and the right wing media repeating Russian talking points daily such as "Hunter Biden's lap talk."
Our media was well aware of the connections between Russia, Brexit, Boris, Facebook, Cambridge Analytica, Fox,
members of Congress, and the Trump Campaign in 2016 but all the covered was HRC and her emails.
