but since the anti-Boris reaction was so big this time, many suggested he just couldn't continue as PM in the - 2 months? - until they've chosen a new leader. But there's never been a "caretaker" PM before, which other countries do use sometimes.

May survived a party vote of no confidence in Dec 2018, but not by much (like Johnson survived, but not by much, a couple of months ago). She continued to lose votes in the Commons on Brexit, with Tory rebels voting against her. After protracted "surely she has to stand down" murmurs, she said on 24 May 2019 she would resign as party leader, but not PM, on 7 June, which allowed them to start the leader selection process. The party election finished on 23 July; she resigned as PM the next day, and Johnson took over then.
