If Trump sees that he is up against De Santis in the primary, could he change parties and run as a libertarian? It could be a good thing for us because the Republican vote would be split in the general election. I could be wrong. Just asking.

(853 posts)You do not need to belong to a party to run for president. Just follow the rules and file with the Feds.

(10,137 posts)for who gets on the ballot. California recognizes 6 parties: Democratic, Republican, American Independent, Green, Peace and Freedom, and Libertarian. Those automatically get their candidates on the presidential ballot. There is a process for getting other candidates on the ballot, either by registering a new party or by being a certified write-in candidate - both methods require organization and work.
But I don't think he's interested in winning as much as he is in keeping the federal investigators away from his 2020 wrongdoings, so maybe he thinks that as long as he's on the ballot in at least one state he can claim whatever immunity Barr made up for him.

(38,562 posts)Then I realized that there is a group of suckers that will buy anything he tries to sell.
Let's face it, he's not even a Republican.
He's a con man, pure and simple.
And seriously, I don't even think it matters to him whether he wins or not. He loves attention and money, and he'll get both no matter what.
I thinking keeping him off the ballot is crucial. He's dangerous when he wins, and he's dangerous when he loses.

They would vote for him, they would embrace him fully.

(2,823 posts)but he'd split the vote; and 1/3 of 1/3 of the electorate ain't much. I don't think he'd do it because someone would clue him in to the numbers inherit in the outcome. The raging fanatics are only about 1/3 of the R's. They're just super loud and they have guns and aren't afraid to do violence. The other 2/3's are frightened little Republican's who don't want to give up power because they're afraid the big bad minorities and democrats will do to them what they've done to Dems and minorities all these years. And so, they seek to rig the voting.
If Democrats can stick together and turn out to the polls en masse, AND keep the polls from being rigged... then we'll bury them. But at this point, I'm afraid that's a tall order. NOT that we'll not turn out. I'm more afraid of the voter suppression and the states usurping the voter/elector results.

I sure hope he does split the party.

Most big names have already said they won't run if Trump does...
The last poll I saw, Trump led DeSantis by 20+pp

(14 posts)Sadly, and more than that, disturbingly, I think if Trump is allowed to run, it'll be Trump/DeSantis.
