Abortion restrictions lead to drop in polls in Texas

Last edited Thu Jul 7, 2022, 08:17 PM - Edit history (1)

Jennifer Rubin

If forced-birth activists thought this situation would be popular, they have greatly miscalculated. A new University of Texas/Texas Politics Project Poll finds only 37 percent of the state’s residents support the new law; 54 percent oppose it. Contrary to the new law, the poll reports, only 8 percent and 13 percent of Texas voters would ban access to abortion in the cases of rape and incest, respectively.

Well over half favor access to abortion for women who are not married and do not want to marry, are poor and cannot afford more children, or are married and do not want more children. Texas provides no such exceptions to its ban.

Meanwhile, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R), a champion of forced birth, saw his lead in the gubernatorial race drop to six percentage points. Nearly 60 percent of residents say Texas is on the wrong track, up eight points since April and a new high since the poll began in 2009.

If one were to invent a regime in which pregnant women were economically, emotionally and physically abused in ways no man would ever tolerate, you would be hard-pressed to come up with a better example than Texas. It’s what happens when women are not treated as full citizens able to make decisions for themselves.

So they won't have to worry about this affecting them in actual elections.

With millions of women who don't support ending abortion and don't vote Republican. That's particularly true of children, the poor, and people of color. Your comment is heartless.

And if the knuckledraggers are the ones most likely and reliably to vote, then how can you NOT have a Knuckledragger State?

I live in a Texas district that is so gerrymandered that there is no way for my vote to elect a decent human being. All we can elect are Republicans because the ruby red parts of the district outnumber the blue parts. Do I deserve the lack of representation I get because my member of the House is a lazy POS who openly says that the only people he represents are the Republicans.

No, neither we, nor the country, deserve the politicians we get when many of them get elected because of gerrymandering and voter suppression/nullification.

I’m not ranting at you. It’s a common saying.

We are trying, but we are so gerrymandered. Remember we gave you Molly, Barbara, Anne, Ralph, Jim, LBJ and many other good guys and gals and we will again.

There are enough anti-Republican voters in Texas, including Democratic constituencies and independent voters, to use turnout as the ticket to big wins. The state party needs to get back the 5-8% of the Latino vote they lost in 2016 and 2022, it's there, they just need motivation to turn out instead of staying home. But the key is getting the turnout in Presidential year numbers.

I have a lot of confidence in the O'Rourke campaign, because he knows where to go get them. But some help would be nice.

They do it to exercise and display their power over others. We'll see if that applies to a majority of Texas voters; and since Abbott's lead in the polls is holding at 6%, it may be fair to say the the majority of Texans are just fine with making women into second-class citizens.

The exceptions to that "no man", of course, to include the radical Republican extremists, 5 of which sit on the Subversive Court. Or maybe they simply are not men, but rather puppets.
