TOKYO — Former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe was shot at a campaign event Friday, public broadcaster NHK reported, citing Japanese police sources.

Party officials cited in Japanese media said Abe is unconscious. He was giving a speech in Nara, east of Osaka, to support a campaigner, according to NHK.

A short time later, the broadcaster reported that Abe was showing no vital signs. At least two gunshots were heard on-site.

A suspect was arrested on-site for attempted murder, and a gun has been seized, NHK reported.

He's the grandson of a big-time war criminal, and is a persistent war crimes denialist and historical revisionist. Over the years he's really, really pissed off politicians and the public of Japan's neighbors with that. So lots of people in China and Korea won't be sad to see this. Doubt they're behind it, though.

OKYO (AP) — Japan’s former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe was in heart failure after apparently being shot during a campaign speech Friday in western Japan, NHK public television said Friday.

The broadcaster aired footage showing Abe collapsed on the street, with several security guards running toward him. Abe was holding his chest when he collapsed, with his shirt smeared with blood. NHK says Abe was rushed to a hospital.

Witnesses reported hearing gunshots in the apparent attack in Nara. He was standing while making an election campaign speech ahead of Sunday’s election for the parliament’s upper house.

Police arrested a male suspect at the scene on suspicion of attempted murder, NHK said.

It sounds like Mr. Abe was quite extreme in his politics but, to quote Justice Louis D. Brandeis, “If there be time to expose through discussion, the falsehoods and fallacies, to avert the evil by the processes of education, the remedy to be applied is more speech, not enforced silence.”

Their gun laws work very well and a single incident, no matter how tragic, does not change that.

That’s 10 deaths with a population about 1/3rd that of the US. We have more than 10 shooting deaths per DAY.
