I am vegetarian but I do plants as much as I can.
I am thinking some of these people must be eco terrorists. I couldn't believe some of the stuff people put on there. I got out as soon as someone started putting up videos of live animals being tortured and screaming.
That was the end. I see enough sorrow and suffering. I don't need more.
And I am a believer. Did me in. I just don't think that kind of stuff helps their cause. People will just shut it all out.
And Buddhists don't believe in telling others how to live their lives. Each person is responsible for their own lives and their own actions.

I just tell people I am vegetarian and leave it at that. I don't believe in that kind of pressure. It only alienates people.

(839 posts)i remember growing up in taiwan, the buddhist chef can make dishes in ways that looks like meat, like 'vegetarian duck'. something that would turn off some of the modern vegans here in the states.
some of the aromatics would be consider 'non-vegan' such as garlic
also i was just recently surprised to learn that a lot of Tibet Buddhists ate meat.

Buddha actually allowed his monks to eat some meat but the conditions were strict. Monks ate one meal a day. They were not allowed to store or prepare food. They ate what was given to them when they went into town with their begging bowls. The need to be grateful for what you were given (and the preparation of the food could mot be prepared by or for the monk) was more important than the eating of meat.
There have been a lot of monks that came later that were really against eating any animals.

(17,298 posts)Vegetarian buffet with many vegan dishes. Their fake meats were excellent. Ive been a vegan for about 8 years and love the current, dazzling array of fake meats. Eating fake meats certainly isnt as healthy as eating whole food plant based meals from scratch but both approaches are kind to animals and the environment and I cant imagine any vegan / vegetarian being upset with others eating fake meats.
Interesting that garlic could be considered non vegan since it isnt an animal or animal product 🙂
I do love garlic.
