Critically ill unvaccinated COVID patients specifically.
I have donated around 650 units. That's probably around 2 hours and 45 minutes to get three units each time. What amounts to flushing them down the toilet is totally unacceptable to me.
Now I know why I keep getting critical shortage of platelet messages urging me to donate. Up until now, during the pandemic my donations have been few because I had a couple surgeries myself and COVID was still spreading in my state, Idaho. I am also retired from the blood center I donate at and know some of the staff are COVIDiots.
I was watching closely to see cases decline before scheduling my next donation and find this out. I think I'll reply to the next request with only if you guarantee me they won't be transfused to unvaccinated COVID patients.

(25,471 posts)Refusing to help critically ill people to make some kind of political point seems a bit misguided.
The right weaponized Covid. Let's not do the same.

(4,131 posts)They ought to be used to treat non-preventable conditions before theyre used to treat easily preventable ones, or at least conditions for which the proposed recipient refused to take readily available precautions.
If there are enough platelets left over after treating non-preventable conditions, only then should we give them to the anti-vaxxers.

Maybe if we fought as hard for our rights as the GOPers fight for their imaginary beings', women in the US would still have their bodily autonomy.

(34 posts)First, thanks for donating, no strings attached. I hear your outrage though.
I am immunosuppressed and a month ago I had to forego my bi-weekly infusion because my platelets were so low I could have easily bled to death internally. Simple solution with a transfusion right? No, had to wait 2 days because of blood shortage specifically for my blood type. So feel the gratitude of many in my situation next time you donate.
Thanks

(10,185 posts)the blood supply was tainted with the virus. My wife kept losing blood due to placenta previa during pregnancy and they couldn't give her blood.
I've seen the almost deadly results of not being able to get a transfusion when you need it. Glad to hear you are better now. Take care.

Every time I think of an accident victim, a heart-attack victim or any other person who needed medical treatment and couldn't get it because anti-vax tRumphumping jackasses were clogging up the system it makes me so angry.
They need to realize there are consequences with mindlessly following tRump

(1,670 posts)It was the surgeries and the vaccines I've taken over the past couple years. I'll be headed back in in a couple weeks (big event and vacation). I won't worry about it going to some idiot, I'll just hope it goes to someone who needs it through no fault of their own.
I'm starting to look at it this way, conservatives wind up passing laws to prevent themselves from being inconvenienced, that everyone else is inconvenienced is irrelevant. It's the Maggie Thatcher/ Ronald Reagan "there is no such thing as society" argument writ large. So we see now the break down in society. We have to fight back by being civil, knowing that it will help "the enemy" sometimes. I assume we wouldn't shoot wounded POWs because they don't wear the right uniform.
On the other hand, I think insurance companies including Medicare / Medicaid should not cover hospitalization costs for elective stupidity.
Your last sentence is spot in. And obviously in this Health Care Environment today is 100 percent legal. Just ask Medicare Advantage insured, that actually had to make claims for serious illness.

(2,953 posts)Many people suffer disease or worse disease because of their own past behavior. Drug users who share needles acquire viruses. Alcoholics develop cirrhosis. Smokers develop COPD. Many people fall short in following prescribed treatment. Others simply ignore important problems, such as high blood pressure.
Medical providers see, but the good ones also learn that when you're helping someone suffering a disease is not the time to judge them as a person. You can't treat just the angels.

(13,593 posts)that make it a serious risk for me to go in and donate in the first place. If my platelets save their sorry ass, will they learn anything? You'd be surprised how many don't. Still won't get vaccinated and spreading bullshit. If they get COVID again, do it all over. I'll pass.
