Days after a mass shooting on the Fourth of July in Highland Park, Illinois, left seven people dead and dozens of others injured, two lawyers connected to the shooting suspect in the case have separately announced that they are stepping down due to "conflicts."
During the shooting suspect's bond court hearing on Wednesday, criminal defense attorney Tom Durkin told the judge he was informed that he had a "conflict of interest" relating to the case and could no longer represent the 21-year-old man accused of first-degree murder.
Instead, the suspect in the shooting was assigned a public defender.
Durkin declined Insider's request for comment.

I'm sure the taxpayers of Lake County who now have to foot the bill for a public defender are thrilled...not!

Obtaining a Public Defender
Public defenders are appointed by the court. If you are charged with a crime and cannot afford to hire an attorney, ask the court to appoint a public defender at your first appearance before a judge. You may be asked to complete a certificate of assets to determine eligibility.
Public Defender is only appointed to represent people in criminal matters, including felonies, misdemeanors, and juvenile court. This does not include filing for divorce, arranging child support, or solving landlord/tenant problems.
Duties & Responsibilities
The Lake County Public Defender's Office represents indigent criminal defendants charged with crimes punishable by incarceration. The goal is to assure an excellent quality of legal representation that is not dependent on the wealth and status of the accused. The Public Defender and Assistant Public Defenders are attorneys licensed to practice in the State of Illinois.
Public Defender attorneys are appointed to criminal defendants who cannot afford a lawyer. If you do not have the money for a lawyer, the Court will appoint you to the Public Defender's Office. This representation is mandated by the U.S. Constitution, the Illinois Constitution, and Illinois law.

(82,849 posts)Young Robert is your poster child, isn't he? Along with the rest of his screwed-up family? You should get him the best representation money can buy. I really want him to have the fairest fucking trial the State of Illinois has ever put on for a criminal defendant. So that when he's convicted, he never again draws breath as a free man, and the rest of us never have to think about his sorry life again.
