https://ohiohouse.gov/members/casey-weinstein/news/ohio-republican-lawmaker-wants-to-require-teaching-german-soldiers-holocaust-perspective-in-classroom-censorship-bill-109365
this article is dated March 25th but the bill is still alive.
Claiming there are two neutral and legitimate sides to the Holocaust is nothing short of denial, said Rep. Weinstein, a Jewish member of the Ohio House. Trying to wipe out and ignore our history while imposing big government on school districts to limit First Amendment rights in an unconstitutionally broad and vague way is chilling and reminiscent of the thought police.
The Both Sides bill would make failing to fairly present both sides of a political or ideological belief or position conduct unbecoming of an Ohio educator, which prompted widespread alarm from teachers and concerned parents. Educators and potentially-impacted organizations across the state have asked how teachers would be expected to confront difficult subjects. How do you teach both sides of the Holocaust? Of 9/11? Of slavery? Of Ukraine?
These comments are absolutely reprehensible, and reveal HB 327s true intent: to force our educators to teach both sides of topics like the Holocaust, slavery or 9/11 that unequivocally have only a right side and a wrong side. This is exactly why we must trust well informed educators, not partisan politicians, to determine what is taught in our classrooms so our children are best prepared for the future, said Rep. Kelly.
ETA: Lurkers, if you need ANY reason in November to vote Democratic up and down the ballot, THIS ... is a reason, one of many. The Democratic Party would NEVER EVER allow such a piece of excrement to be introduced into any state legislature or Congress.

(6,893 posts)There is the evil side, where human beings were murdered for their religious beliefs and the horrifically evil side, wherein hypocrites just like these assholes voting for this bill, justify the murders in the name of their preferred religion. I suppose the word, "horrific" fits both sides, so there's that both-siderism, also.
Absolutely disgusting.

Although, that probably isn't far off. They will probably lean into the anticommunism of the Third Reich.

To think, I once called Ohio home for my 30 years in the Navy.
What the fuckety-fuck is going on up there?
Maybe "The" Ohio State University should stop broadcasting their sports on radio stations that provide nothing but Nazi propaganda for the other 165 hours of the week.

(33,027 posts)The state can up their sales tax revenues or property taxes to cover the difference.
My taxes went up in 2017 by 9K a year - not due to some radically huge raise in income.
I don't want to pay for this anymore than I want to pay for Florida State U when DeSantis is giving ideology tests.

(20,359 posts)And the side that those who perpetrated the crime were not excused because they were following orders?
On the 4th of July I caught my favorite Twilight Zone episode, Death's Head Revisited. I believe of all of Rod Serling's closing comments this has the most powerful message.
There is an answer to the doctor's question. All the Dachaus must remain standing. The Dachaus, the Belsens, the Buchenwalds, the Auschwitzes all of them. They must remain standing because they are a monument to a moment in time when some men decided to turn the Earth into a graveyard. Into it they shoveled all of their reason, their logic, their knowledge, but worst of all, their conscience. And the moment we forget this, the moment we cease to be haunted by its remembrance, then we become the gravediggers. Something to dwell on and to remember, not only in the Twilight Zone but wherever men walk God's Earth.

(39,129 posts)There was an old black and white TV show (Twilight Zone?) about a Nazi official on trial for the Holocaust. He admitted everything including the reason for the Holocaust. Another Nazi official got up on the witness stand and denounced him severely as a traitor to the cause. Not because he committed the crimes, but because he admitted the reason / cause of the Holocaust programs. He put it out for the world to see as an organized program

(664 posts)And the bill has 2 sponsors and 35 co-sponsors! WOW JUST WOW.
The article cited above says that after a sponsor of the bill commented that the bill would require, for example, teaching the German soldiers' perspective on the Holocaust, "The Anti-Defamation League of Ohio condemned the Republican sponsors Holocaust comments, prompting the member to issue a statement painting the ADL and other justifiably concerned organizations as 'left-wing special interests.''"

Der Giftpilz is a piece of antisemitic Nazi propaganda published as a children's book by Julius Streicher in 1938. The title is German for "the poisonous mushroom/toadstool". After the war, Streicher was convicted of being an accessory for crimes against humanity in the Nuremberg trials and executed in 1946.

(11,095 posts)Looks like Rep. Weinstein posted an outrageous claim that went viral and then followed it up with a request for money. How does he deduce that both sides of the holocaust will be promoted in Ohio?
Sympthsical
(9,867 posts)What is the "other side" of the Holocaust? The article notes the perspective of the German soldiers. I mean, you could teach that perspective, but wouldn't it mostly be they were either ordered to commit it or twisted by a genocidal racial ideology? I could watch a serial killer documentary on YouTube, and the killer's "side" is, "I'm fucked up, so I killed people." Which you sort of just assume going in.
Is there another side I'm missing that doesn't involve denial it happened?
I think movies and documentaries about how the German people took the turn they did are pretty interesting and a vital historical perspective to have in a "things not to do" context. That's the only other side I can see.
Now I have a weird urge to go re-watch Europa, Europa.
