(10,434 posts)I cringe whenever I see a red hat, even though most aren't the stupid MAGA hats.

(50,278 posts)That could be really funny in encounters with dumb MAGAs who don't know what POS means.

(102,292 posts)Because from a distance, people will confuse it.
Red hats, US flags-- even crosses for those who do (or once) observed its original meaning--all have been tarred with the Trumpist and Fascist RW brush.

(9,815 posts)With Apple getting tougher for developers to deal with every release, a major change is in the works. I'll keep a legacy system around.
Knoppix has the virtue of being bootable Live DVD or thumb, and no systemd. Fine for home use.
And kind to old hardware. I've got it running on an ancient Compaq 17 inch laptop.
FWIW, any apparel in red was donated to charity.

(15,265 posts)I have a Toshiba Sattalite laptop that a friend gave me. It was his wifes
The hard drive had an error in the boot sector and would not boot windows . After he gave up trying yo tecover it I offered to try and recover the data from the drive using some bootable Linux based tools. During that process I found that I could still partion it and install linux and could boot it. So after recovering the data I installed Fedora Core on it. It really is a fantastic operating system and it keeps getting better. So I gave it back but my friends said I could keep. They had already bought a new laptop. It ran well for several years until the hard drive startrf to throw errors on boot with some verbiage suggesting to replace it as it was about to go bad. It had a 500g drive so I bought 1 terabyte ssd drive and a USB adapter and then flashed Clonezilla onto a pendrive
You plug the new drive that is connect to the USB adapter into one USB port and then boot Clonzilla off the pendrive plugged into another port. Then select the menu options to clone the old drive to the new one. It automatically clonedd the old 500g drive onto the 1 terabyte ssd drive and sized it for the bigger drive. When it finished I just swapped the cloned drive for with the old one and it booted up as if nothing happened. Other then being a little faster with the ssd drive.

(9,815 posts)I worked at Sun and there were a quite a few ideas that didn't catch fire with customers. I am shortening these.
First was an optical media based computer for schools (indestructable!) Like TAILS in safety.
Second was the Cobalt box. Sun bought Cobalt, which was an ARM computer in a box with a linux distro, webmin, etc.
Third was Sunray, which we used internally in offices. The Sunray was basically a frame buffer. The host computer ran all the sessions (virtual machines a little ahead of their time?) and kept state.
I did what I could, but marketing lagged (and the industry fell off a cliff once or twice) ... more
All that said, my "thing" about Knoppix is that it contains a lot of educational stuff. Off the top, some math apps, and GCompris (a bundle of educational apps), which is aimed at young kids. Games! Definitely look it up. There was a SciLinux that was outstanding, but it was replaced (I think, by CERN).
Apologies to the OP!! I added some pertinent stuff. (a hat or other with LGB, for something to do with Brandon) but meaning something else.

WATCH THE GAP!
But seriously, while I never had a red hat, the tectonic shift in iconography from RHL to MAGA was hurtful.
I installed Yellow Dog Linux on a mac G3 laptop, the "Uploading Virus" model.
And without doxxing myself, Jeff Goldblum IS my doppelgänger.
OK, gotta go. Craving sugar.

(9,815 posts)I finally signed up for the "better" internet here. Damn DSL is better than wireless hot spot. (Verizon went straight to hell) That said, I can catch up with many things.(downloads)
I've been recommending TAILS.

I had "the talk" with Earl. I quoted too much, since every third post I read was doing so. Singled out? Hmmmmmmm.
So, a semi-snide remark will show up now and then. DMCA is a fraud and a power grab. It silences speech because bogus DMCA claims are honored and it's up to the poor schmuck "guilty until proven innocent" to pay for their own defense.
Remarkable foreshadowing of what's going on these days.
One of those "Predictable Surprises".

(58,670 posts)I bought it in 2015. It is solid red and is emblazoned with a USMC emblem on the face of the crown.
Nice looking hat, but I felt that after trump made red hats a sign of the apocalypse, I hung it up and never wore it again...until a couple of weeks ago. I finally said fuck it! It's my hat! If someone sees it from behind and misjudges it, if they try to approach me with high 5s for trump, I'll just have to set them straight.
